As usual, there are limitations, but we also see and propose feasible near-future opportunities to further tailor and enhance AB-IVR method. Exciting times ahead!

We applied AB-IVR on Estonian Biobank data and demonstrated causal effects on migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and many more.

Important part on the background are the assumptions of instrumental variable regression: we discuss in detail and pursue a plethora of sensitivity analyses to account for the three assumptions.

In our paper we explore the idea of using information about antibiotics usage as instrument in the instrumental variable regression and propose a new framework for analysing the causal effect of microbiome on health outcomes: antibiotic instrumental variable regression (AB-IVR)

We pondered further along the road of instrumental variable analysis - what would be a good instrument for assessing the effect of microbiome?...antibiotics usage! We and others have previously shown that antibiotics have a long term and accumulating effect on the microbiome.

We wanted to find an alternative for mendelian randomization when analyzing microbiome data. Why? Because genetic instruments might not work for microbiome, due to low heritability.
