Most guides and quizzes I've made on IG have assumed a basic level of knowledge about Russian military vehicles - but for beginners here's some vehicle ID at a basic level with a quick description of ID points and capabilities. Also up on the website for digital download.

Challenger 2 OES thread 1/ The OES Challenger 2, known in military parlance as the Operational Entry Standard (OES) – often synonymous with Theatre Entry Standard (TES) – represents an advanced tier of armoured capability, a step above the baseline vanilla model.

Russian T-64’s of various models (A,B,BV) that have been pulled from storage, the 2000 T-64’s in Russian stock in 2014 were supposed to have been scrapped, I don’t believe that ever happened due to the amount of T-64’s I’ve seen come from Russia, or if it did it was a very slow

Video of a relatively rare tank duel between a Ukrainian T-64 tank and what looks like a Russian T-72B3 with a roof screen near Stepove. The Russian tank deploys a smoke screen as it retreats, and survives an FPV strike that apparently jammed its turret. https://t.co/ZfiDKAM7Ln

1/ The effects of rodents on AFV’s Rodents have long been a problem for infantry in the trenches, but a lesser known fact is the issue of rodents when they embed themselves in armoured fighting vehicles.

A video of a tank getting hit by an ATGM and surviving will always get far fewer views and retweets than when a tank is destroyed in a huge fire ball. This gives people a false understanding of the vulnerability of tanks, and often leads to poor analysis. Just a regular reminder.

Video of a Russian tank surviving an ATGM strike (the source claims it was from tank fire) after firing on Ukrainian positions. The video shows the wreckage of several destroyed tanks or IFVs. https://t.co/Zbc8wpOtPv

@naalsio26 8. “But Russians are saying it’s fake!” LostArmor and a lot of the large telegram groups claimed it was fake because of a strange line in the trees near the tank’s turret base. However, the problem with this is that this line is not present in the original photo @naalsio26 found

@naalsio26 7. The point that the sights are blocked by the modifications, and this is what is important to remember - just because it’s stupid doesn’t make it fake. I didn’t see anybody crying fake on this ridiculous mod of a BTR-82A where the main gun is blocked.

@naalsio26 6. People who claim “photoshop” don’t understand photoshop. You need a picture to work with - i.e the muzzle sensor. It is not the T-90M’s one mirrored, it has no bolts on the side and the hole is different. So where did this picture come from in order to “photoshop” it on?

5. The video @naalsio26 is referring to begins by saying that the untrained eye that does not know about tanks will think this is real. However, I am neither untrained in photoshop or tanks (a few months ago my fake Cr.2 made it onto a Russian news website and most TG groups)

4. The asymmetric placement of the ERA - this is exactly what you would expect ERA fitted to a cast turret to look like as opposed to the welded turret. Just look at the 1992 T-90 model as an example.

3. The headlights belonging to a T-90M - replacing headlights with that of a different model is nothing unusual, here a T-80U hull has T-80BV headlights.

This same T-80BV was spotted about 2 months ago, notably the tank appears to have been a very late run model with a T-80U hull shown by the T-80U style cover over the driver’s port. It’s sad to hear of it and the crew’s fate.

2. The point on the headlights, this is not the only example of a single headlight tank being fitted with a second headlight beneath the driver’s view ports. Below is a T-55 example of the same thing

In the wild 90's there were also bizarre projects such as hybrid T-55 (chassis), T-72B (turret, it was put because a new "unified turret" with bustle autoloader was not ready) and T-80 (front pair of rollers) - hybrid T-55 with T-72 and "Black Eagle" ( https://t.co/F703xGfQxC).

1. I’m going to add to what @naalsio26 has said on this topic and why I also think this is not a fake. I’ll eat whatever is left of his hat if it it’s wrong. Firstly, the “transparent” sight is the shadow from the ridge on the housing design

Seeing as a certain YouTuber has now claimed that this photo is somehow photoshopped, I thought I'd share more details on the source. It was posted by a woman who runs a small Russian volunteer group on Telegram. The alleged "Photoshop" garnered a response of a whopping 7
