also this, everybody wants to help you out if you’re even a little bit polite.
despite how it may look from the outside, tech is probably the least cutthroat industry there is. having worked in politics, and having close friends in finance, tech is uniquely filled with people that are just happy to help you if you’re nice and not trying to take advantage.

And as a candidate, if I feel I’m just being evaluated on solving a computer science trivia question? That’s a red flag against the company. Solving leetcode ≠ being a good software engineer. If I don’t have a good rapport with the interviewer, that’s not a good sign for them.

in an interview, you should be having a conversation with the other party: as an interviewer, it’s a bad sign if I can’t follow along with the candidate’s progress, or they never tell me what they’re thinking or ask clarifying questions.

every company worth their salt should be evaluating you not on your ability to solve a leetcode hard in a single shot, but on your ability to think clearly step by step and work through a problem using the resources available to you (often, the interviewer!).

having been on both sides of the interview table, I see too many candidates approaching tech screens as “I must complete this problem at any cost” while the company grades on the axis of “how well does the candidate demonstrate critical thinking ability” which are not the same.

this post is bait obviously but I think treating a technical interview as a pair programming session instead of a pop quiz is underrated and under discussed.
How to pass the SWE interview:. just be semi-competent and rizz the interviewer like crazy. they will pass you. it’s literally that easy.

feels easier (for me) to be funny in a tweet and easier to be critical in a blog post. not sure why that is. it keeps me from writing longer form more often.
