Portland Meadows racetrack opened in 1946. It survived a flood and a fire, and brought the sport of horse racing to Northwest fans for over seven decades.

PEDIGREE NOTE: Sires get more attention than dams. In the case of SOVEREIGNTY, he is out of Crowned, and goes back to the very talented Lakeway (x Seattle Slew-Milliardaire, x Alydar), pictured below. This is also the female family of Derby/Belmont winner Bold Forbes.

SPECTACULAR BID is the best horse Iāve seen since I started following racing. The best horses Iāve seen since him are Arrogate and Flightline. Sovereignty is very talented, and remarkably consistent. Respect him greatly, but not ready to throw him in that companyā¦yet.

JAVA GOLD - I loved this horse. He had such an interesting pedigree. Itās a shame he wasnāt more successful and was exported. His pedigree offered significant stamina and classic influences, which unfortunately contributed to his lack of commercial-and overall-success.
JAVA GOLD (b. 1984, Key to the Mint-Javamine, by Nijinsky II) at Saratoga. The Mack Miller-trained Rokeby Stable homebred was a G1 winner at 2, but he was better at 3. He won the G1 Whitney, G1 Travers, G1 Marlboro, Best Turn S., and was second in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

STUD COLTS - I worked for many years at Portland Meadows. Being a low level track, the vast majority of male horses on the grounds were gelded. Iāve heard enough stories though to think the below is accurate. š.
