The barn that was Horatio Luro's was, in more recent years, the barn of D. Wayne Lukas. I sure wonder what other trainers have stabled there over the many decades.

So cool to see Churchill Downs' backstretch still looks sorta like it did on KY Derby day 1962. 63 years ago! The barn at left was Horatio Luro's...that's him on pony. He won that Derby with Decidedly. Back-right barn is 45. Thanks, @kelseyjdanner, for helping confirm location!

Saturday, @OaklawnRacing, was Skelly’s final start. John Sellers, Chris Hicks & Red Lane TBs wanted to retire Skelly when he showed us it was time. He’s healthy, happy, and can enjoy his well earned, well deserved retirement. Skelly, Thank you. Thank you for one hell of a ride.

RIVA RIDGE (First Landing - Iberia, by Heliopolis) won 17 of 30 starts with 3 seconds, 1 third, earning $1,111,347. Side note: He was known to not enjoy muddy tracks. 😅 RIVA RIDGE was syndicated for stud duty for $5,120,000, and he stood at Claiborne Farm his entire career.

UNBELIEVABLE was reportedly sold by Calumet to WW Naylor, CA, for $25,000. That article mentions he had a stablemate at Naylor's named Re-Armed, full brother of Calumet champ Armed. A 1955 article says UNBELIEVABLE was one of CA's "most successful stallions." Photo, James Sames

Calumet Farm's mare HYDROPLANE II (GB, Hyperion) can be forgiven for 'only' producing one Citation. This 1949 colt, UNBELIEVABLE, wasn't much of a racehorse, nor, later, sire. Per a 😳newspaper article: ..."his only resemblance to Big Cy is the location of a leg on each corner."

RIVA RIDGE was crowned 1971's leading juvenile male and, in 1973, champion older horse. In the 1973 Brooklyn, he set a 1 3/16-mile world record (1:52 2/5). RIVA RIDGE was named into racing's Hall of Fame in 1998. How I loved the kindly, lop-eared beauty. https://t.co/x33909WHoS

D. Wayne Lukas believed racing was about more than winning—it was about inspiring the next generation. Today at Oaklawn, we honored the late Hall of Fame trainer by welcoming kids into the winner’s circle as our tribute played on the big screen, honoring a tradition Lukas made
