Ok, Iโm shuttering things here. Posting on Twitter/X feels to me more and more like the digital equivalent of driving a Tesla, and Iโm not comfortable with it any more. For info on new postings and general comment etc, I can be found on ๐ฆ with the same handle as here.

Thereโs a reason why the chainsaw is such an apt symbol for the current assault on American #science: because you can cut a tree down in minutes, but growing it back takes decades. Some thoughts on the USA's chainsaw massacre ๐

New posting! A 1st-hand account of the pros and cons of publishing with @eLife's bold publish/review/curate model, with some recommendations that would make the process even smoother.๐ (Thank you @eLife!) .

In January 2023, the journal eLife โ long at the vanguard of the progressive movement in scientific publishing โ took the radical step of adopting a โpublish, review. curateโ model. Herโฆ

New posting! I was recently part of an @embl #Careers webinar to discuss #MedComms, & why this might be the best career option for scientists who enjoy the writing/communicating/organising aspects of the job the most ๐คฉ below.๐.

New posting, and a last one for 2024! This oneโs about the lifetime of scientific fields, and how itโs not just scientists that get oldโฆ What do you think โ clear-eyed, or overly cynical? What stage is your field at?๐.
totalinternalreflectionblog.com
Itโs not just scientists that get old. Scientific fields have their own lifetimes, just like people.

New posting! #Movember2024 may be over, but that's no reason not to take one last look (for now) at some "Great #scientists, great #moustaches"! The 8th instalment of TIR's longest-running series is now available, where science meets male #grooming ๐จ๐.

This story was a really fun collaboration between my group and @flink2243 (Engstler group) in @ZEB_UniWue and Claudia Veigel of @LMU_Muenchen. Really pleasing blend of fluorescence imaging, electron microscopy, and biochemistry. Not the last thing I'll publish, but nearly. ๐.

New posting! What is it that links the 1924 #Everest expedition with the 2024 #Nobel prizes? A riff on how science would benefit from more equality of opportunity. ๐.

Does anyone know what this kind of #DataVis is called? I think this is absolutely stunning - efficiently (& compactly) captures both individual characteristics AND descriptive statistics for the whole cohort in an intuitively understandable way.

Remember, remember the 1st of #Movember! It's #moustache time in 2024 and before a new instalment of our "Great scientists, great moustaches" comes along, it's time to take a look back at some fab Mos from the past. @MovemberUK @Movember @MovemberAUS ๐.
