Leveraging the stochastic nature of our model, we derived analytical predictions for species abundance.distributions in these regimes, quantifying how stochasticity interacts with dispersal and division to shape community diversity. (4/5).

We find that stochasticity during the assembly phase is critical in creating diversity within and between communities. We identified distinct dispersal regimes—characterized by the relative rates of dispersal and division—that produce varying levels of diversity. (3/5).

Microbial communities display variability in richness and abundance, even when assembled from the same species pool. How strongly and frequently different deterministic and stochastic factors drive this variability is a fundamental and unsolved question in ecology. (2/5).
