“In South Africa, race is seen as…”. “In Jamaica, it’s not as cut-and-dried…”. None of that has anything to do with anything going on here. It’s whataboutism. If folks like Musk and Mamdani are considered “African American,” we absolutely need to adjust what that means.

It’s similar to when some tell us to forget slavery or “remember that we’re all Americans.” Lol. US powerbrokers spent centuries letting Black folks born here know we’re different. This term was a signifier of an ethnic group, not a catchall for anyone w a connection to Africa.

That last line is so funny. Yes, the question of identity markers is a good one when “African American” is clearly being used a label it was never intended for. But no one in America is worried about how the world views our racial politics. They’re this way for a reason.
