I've tried to put down in words (😉) why I am so pro the Tom Cleverley appointment and it's basically nothing to do with actual football. Just vibes:
#WatfordFC
FAO Sunderland fans: there seems to be some sort of widespread misconception that you’ll be taking part in a ‘football match’ against
#WatfordFC
on Saturday. It’ll be Sunderland v XI deckchairs. Do not worry one iota. Get the cigars out.
Bristol City:
• 8 defeats in 11
• FA Cup tie in midweek
• Injury crisis
• Adrian Mariappa at LB
• Ex-
#WatfordFC
duo Mark Ashton + Andy Rolls (Head of Medical) coming under fire per
@TheAthleticUK
today.
Big opportunity this Saturday. But they'll see it the same way.
"Nathan Aké who went on loan from
#CFC
to
#WatfordFC
and didn't feature," says Jonathan Pearce.
That's 2016/17 Young Player of the Season, Nathan Aké, Jonathan.
Troy Deeney statement:
1. A massive and disrespectful middle finger to Ivić
2. Confirmation of what we all feared – he is all powerful
3. Confirmation club would rather hitch their wagon to ageing and declining player than any HC over last 8 years
#WatfordFC
#WatfordFC
fans know behind-closed-doors friendlies have always gone on, right? It’s just that we didn’t always have social media and a burning entitlement to know every bowel movement within the club. 🤷♂️
Deadline day
#WatfordFC
predictions:
1. Dan Gosling freed at about 9pm
2. Ken Sema parked on loan at Udinese
3. Ashley Fletcher still here at 11pm
4. A fanbase divided between 'great window' and 'we are f*****'
Man, this is embarrassing.
Pozzos a 'disgrace' and have 'no football expertise' – aye, except their 30+ year tenure at Udinese and reams of players their network has discovered. They have made mistakes. But they're still very good owners.
#WatfordFC
“I’m FURIOUS, FURIOUS, FURIOUS!”
“These owners are a disgrace!” 😡
“This will be a Championship club next season, we could go like Sunderland.”
You must listen to this incredible rant from Joel the
#WatfordFC
fan! 🔥
If as per Adam Leventhal's
@TheAthleticUK
piece today
#WatfordFC
have not ruled out retaining Roy Hodgson beyond this season then Pozzo and co. have truly lost the plot.
I can’t believe I’ve heard people say we’re no better off/we were no worse off under Laurence Bassini. Really think about what that means. *Really* think about it. Some remarkably short memories out there, apparently.
What’s really classy is a bunch of grown adults who should know better weaponising a teenager who, by all accounts just underwent surgery and has a right to privacy, to point score against a club legend who’s become their straw man. Watford FC in 2024. Bravo!
Hello
@NFFC
, I see you’ve sacked Andy Scott and Fillipo Giraldi and now want to appoint Ross Wilson.
If ex-
#WatfordFC
staff are your bag, have Cristiano Giaretta instead. He’s *really* good 👍
It’s so wonderfully Ken Sema to score a stunner out of nowhere then end the night at LB in a makeshift back five. He’s the hero
#WatfordFC
need but don’t deserve. I’ll never hear otherwise.
Glenn Tamplin criticises BTFC players for refusing to donate a week's wages after three defeats in four.
They're top with seven games in hand and in two cup finals... 🤔
If Troy Deeney is even a fraction of the leader I reckon he thinks he is, it's time to step aside and use his influence to ensure Danny Welbeck starts v Arsenal.
#WatfordFC
So Rajović is shit, Louza has a bad attitude, wants out and is off to Luton and Ismaël is useless and has no Plan B. Plus the usual favourite hits on Bachmann. Think I’ve caught up on the latest dumpster fire 💪
#WatfordFC
Some
#WatfordFC
thoughts –
1. I've given him stick but Troy Deeney was excellent tonight and led the line superbly. His work rate was central to everything good – along with Richarlison and Gerard Deulofeu.
2. The pressing from the front three and midfield was immense.
I can't be alone in thinking
#WatfordFC
did not expect – nor plan – to lose Cucho Hernández, Ismaïla Sarr, João Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis in one window, right?
The basics of football are that you build from the back and make yourself hard to beat. Whatever else you can say about Tom Cleverley's
#WatfordFC
, they're harder to beat. With the fixture list we have and the threat of relegation when he took over, we needed precisely that.
I try to steer clear of reactionary
#WatfordFC
hyperbole on here. But the vanity signing of an at best half-fit Emmanuel Dennis as our only January addition was a dereliction of duty.
At this stage you have to admire his piss-boiling of
#WatfordFC
Twitter. If the club have any sense they'll shuffle him out before the final two home games to avoid any further toxicity.
With this year’s Herts Pride taking place next Saturday, we’re delighted to confirm that our shirt sleeves will feature the event logo throughout the rest of August! 🏳️🌈
Read more about the celebrations. ⤵️
If the pre-season defeats have been evidence of impending doom, I assume equal weight is given to thrashing Wycombe and we're going to waltz this pathetic league, right?!
#WatfordFC
Never heard from Liam Rosenior in any context other than post match. But this was excellent & underlines – as if needed – broadcasters should look beyond the 'big-name' pundit for those who can offer actual insight 👏
A PR disaster-class from start to finish by Nike. I would hardly consider not apologising, taking almost three months to rectify the error, charging nearly £100 a jersey and not bothering to publicise their sale a resolution either. Must do better!
I was critical of Claudio Ranieri post West Ham. But it says everything about
#WatfordFC
if the hierarchy think the problem lies with the head coach and not their decisions.
Somehow I’m staggered by the anger on here tonight when there seems to be pretty much universal agreement they are:
A) Knackered
B) Short of depth
C) Trying their best
No doubt we need 2-3. Considerable doubt we’ll get any of those tomorrow.
#WatfordFC
Since Okay Yokuslu made his WBA debut on February 7th he ranked as below vs. Premier League central midfielders:
- 4th for interceptions
- 3rd for aerial duels won
- 10th for tackles won
- 4th for possession regains in defensive third
#WatfordFC
I always seem to write about
#WatfordFC
when the shit hits the fan at the season's end... and this year is no different 😅
Thoughts on player power, cultural resets and why I am still, just about, not
#PozzoOut
. Just 👇
You cannot pretend to be a serious football club with anything that even vaguely resembles a ‘strategy’ when you restructure an entire department to appoint a bloke you subsequently bin less than a year into a five-year contract.
#WatfordFC
The right decision for so many reasons. Tom Cleverley is more than a coach for me – he is a feeling. A warm fuzzy one that takes me back to the hope and excitement of yesteryear when I wasn’t so ground down by it all. He’s also called Tom: a plus.
I aspire to have the confidence Hull keeper Ryan Allsop has. Berating his defenders for letting in a 40+ yarder he makes no attempt to save. Some audacity!
EXC: I’ve got hold of the org chart, folks. I’m assured it’s only on a whiteboard to allow us to be agile and for no other reason. Clear as muck, I’m sure you’ll agree!
#WatfordFC
So today on
#WatfordFC
Twitter it’s blame a journalist because a prospective buyer has pulled out. If any of it ever had legs, I’m sure we’ll really miss the game-changing potential of a bloke who - checks notes - owns a side from Zimbabwe & has links to a Slovenian club!
So nothing is wrong, the coaches were always to blame, we’ve never made a mistake, we’re not agent led, Mogi is great but we do use other agents; Manga and Giaretta do the recruitment, the Kamara deal was not a big old fiddle, everything is FINE, OK?
#WatfordFC
Honestly, at this point just make Troy Deeney player-manager. That way he'll get sacked within five months and we can finally be allowed to move on as a club.
#WatfordFC
Dec: appoint technical director with mandate for whole football side
May: appoint head coach with ‘wider managerial remit to influence the footballing set-up around him’
Oct: sack the technical director for above reasons
Market-leading strategy from
#WatfordFC
, as ever.
We had three right-backs so someone had to go. Ngakia looked like the odd man out given his stagnation and lack of quality on the ball
Now a bloke we signed for cash money in January, seemingly tied to our super duper new scout, departs?
I’m baffled.
#WatfordFC
Smart move by
#WatfordFC
to use the only two men’s players fans like – Porteous and Andrews – to launch a stunning kit. Kelme rarely miss. I was sceptical when they came in but this is another hit, for me.
Erm, we appointed someone in May last year with the intention of giving him the time and tools to best attack the job. Anyone recall how that turned out?
#WatfordFC
Hi,
@ManUtd
, I've just solved all your problems. Ole Gunnar Solskjær should be your director of football –
1. He's a bad manager
2. You want a legend for the role
3. He's good at getting rid of rubbish (Smalling, Sánchez)
4. His three signings are your best players.
#MUFC
Scott Duxbury was adamant we’d be free of external debt by this summer. If the price of achieving that was a couple of quiet windows, would you take it?
That is obviously entirely reliant on us achieving that status…
#WatfordFC
Honestly, I’m just here for the Twitter meltdown. It’s good to have a good captain. It’s better to have a team of leaders who hold each other accountable and drive high standards. I won’t lose sleep over this.
#WatfordFC
This is a very Tory party transfer. Pay €5m for a nobody who cost €1.5m 24 hours earlier, through your dodgy agent mate, before loaning him back to that club six months later. Absolute honker from start to finish.
#WatfordFC
#WatfordFC
's problems run far deeper than terrible defending. But having now watched Match of the Day as well as the game, every goal today was either the result or beneficiary of a horrendous individual error. We have bad defenders.
With Roberto Pereyra on the verge of joining Udinese, I feel we never truly saw the best of him for a season. Javi Gracia got the best from him but the way he could go from game-changer to absolute passenger was maddening. Which probably explains how he ended up at
#WatfordFC
.
😂
#watfordfc
defence is laughable
Literally chasing shadows and impeding Bachmann. Poor bloke doesn’t stand a chance with that mob in front of him
Where is Sierralta going?!
Thoughts on Imrân Louza:
1. An Aaron Rodgers-like ability to make himself the story when he shouldn’t – so let’s not give him too much coverage!
2. The disrespect for Valérien Ismaël & his teammates would set me off.
3. Surely he can’t believe he should start on form?
We are the most ridiculous club. Quite apart from the fact the sacking is unjust, the bollocks about a new era adds another layer of stupidity to this decision. Worse, backing Giaretta - i.e. the owner’s mate - over the HC you invested in four months ago is insanity.
#WatfordFC
So we’re in talks with a player we released - but never bothered to acknowledge we released - months ago. Plus two more oldies who have been associated with continual underachievement for two seasons, one of whom can barely get fit. We are such a weird club.
#WatfordFC
Biggest opening-day win for
#WattfordFC
since beating Bolton Wanderers 3-0 in 2014/15. We next played Stevenage after in the League Cup and, as I'm sure you all know, won promotion. So we're probably going up now.
Controversial opinion: the Easter break > Christmas break.
Fewer expectations, less expense, less nonsense, clear four days off without fail (sorry if you are working) better weather (usually!) and wall-to-wall football – usually with significance.
Gonna be controversial here. Not the worst
#WatfordFC
signing in my lifetime. Nathan Ellington was far more of a financial millstone around our necks when we couldn’t afford him.
Gutted for
#BarnetFC
, fans etc. Form in the last eight games shows the potential this team has. Yet only one man extracted it from them. The only salvation can be getting Martin Allen back next season. End of.
The angst around Ben Foster's YouTube channel is symptomatic of one of the worst parts of modern-day football: the idea players can't have any sort of personality or life outside. Yet we wonder why players are so guarded – it's hardly a mystery.
#WatfordFC
Good job Aidy Boothroyd rested Phil Foden. Those 1,033 minutes this season must really have taken their toll but he'll be raring to go for the knockouts. Oh...
#ENGU21
#MCFC
This confirms
#WatfordFC
have 20 ‘senior’ (and that includes Morris & Andrews) outfield professionals 😬
No Baah or Pussetto to pad that figure out ❌
It’s a 20-man matchday squad this season. Depth required as well as starting-calibre players at CB, DM, CM, RW, ST 📝
I can’t remember the last time we were there until after full time with such a good atmosphere. That could be a season-changing result. Can’t be coincidence two players (at least) collapsed at FT – they put in a shift, to a man.
#WatfordFC
I've been thinking about
#WatfordFC
for a few days now. Here's 3,000 words on the season just gone: Gracia, Sánchez Flores, Pearson, Mullins, Giraldi, Pozzo, Deeney, Dawson and everybody between:
Some classic Martin Allen behaviour here ahead of
#BarnetFCs
's trip to
#GTFC
...
'We've got so many injuries' = all the long term absentees, some kids and those who won't play anyway
'Even John is having a fitness test' = He's fine
'We haven't been able to train' = We have
Giorgi Chakvetadze was the one upside of that game. Felt like
#WatfordFC
got into good positions without finding the killer ball. Ryan Andrews was particularly guilty on that front. More players who never got going than did.
4. Sets a dangerous mandate for next HC who now *has* to pick Deeney
5. Creates a massive story every time next HC doesn't pick him
6. Shows a complete lack of awareness/ability to read the room from
#WatfordFC
News:
#WatfordFC
Sporting Director Cristiano Giaretta has agreed a new 3 yr deal at the Championship club.
Italian has been in post since 2020, will continue to work alongside Technical Director Ben Manga as part of hierarchy.
Story for
@TheAthleticFC
I like to think I'm patient & not reactionary. But the stats and the eye test marry up. We are no better under Xisco Muñoz than we were under Vladimir Ivić. There are 18 games to play. Pozzo & Duxbury have to swallow their pride before it's too late.
#WatfordFC
'I could've gone in and righted the ship, Bruce and Hughes too..'
Paul Ince backs himself to have had the same success as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. 🔴
Stephen Warnock isn't so sure.. 🤔
#SaturdaySav
A regular criticism of
#WatfordFC
has been their lack of backbone, courage or character. The Norwich win wasn’t perfect – not by a long stretch – but we’d previously have collapsed entirely and lost that game.
