AEP Ohio is seeking the Commission's approval to significantly increase financial protections for new data center customers. The problem with this approach is that it makes developing and operating a data center much more expensive, stifling growth and innovation. 5/10.

According to AEP Ohio the financial risk is too high; they are concerned that the new transmission infrastructure will be underutilized and the costs to build it would be absorbed into the rates AEP Ohio's other customers pay. 4/10.

Since the moratorium went into effect, ~90 data center service requests totaling more than 3 GW have been submitted to AEP Ohio. Supporting this growth will require AEP to massively invest in new transmission infrastructure. 3/10.

Central Ohio has become one of the largest data center hubs in the US over the last decade. However, in March 2023, AEP Ohio implemented a moratorium on new data center service connections in Central Ohio as remaining capacity on their system dwindled. 2/10.
