Wondering about the word Barya. There is an ethnic group called Barya/Nara in Eritrea. I wonder if there ethnonym gradually got the meaning of 'Slave'. Similar to Europe where the word slave comes from Slavs? Does that make sense? @ZecariasG ?

It's an Italian monument at there is also an Italian flag. Ras Alula isn't and wasn't liked much in Eritrea due to his meddling in local politics. Anyway, I also find it sad that the only monument commemorating Dogali is this one.
There is no African country that's proud of being colonized. Eritrea is an exception. They erected a monument near Massawa for Italian soldiers fought against Ethiopian General Ras Alula and defeated at the battle of Dogali. Eritrean elite mentality is quite d/t from Africans.

This is great! The people reacting negatively are the ones that believe that Europe used to be 'purely white' and that the first Africans came on boats in the late 20th century. The Anglo-Saxons migrated to the British Isles - not sure whether I would have used the word 'migrant'
Children book meant for 7 year old in the UK teaches that Anglo Saxons were "Migrants". I'm noticing this word being tossed around a lot these days. The title of the book is "Brilliant Black British History".

There used to be slave raids on Christian villages in the borderlands too. And many were captured during conflicts with neighboring Islamic polities and then sold off to Arabia. Anyway, didn't Habeshi generally refer to 'black' slaves at some point?
