The Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner by-election has been caused because the “successful” Conservative candidate was barred from taking-up the role on account of two historic criminal convictions. The price tag of re-running the election is £1.5 million of taxpayer cash.

A re-run of the Police and Crime Commissioner election in Wiltshire and Swindon will take place on Thursday 19 August. Our brilliant candidate is Councillor Brian Mathew, who has been fighting hard for Wiltshire and Swindon for many years. #wiltshirepcc

@rupertevelyn @Conservatives No mention of apparent inability to understand the PCC rules & guidance on candidate eligibility or even the approx £1.5 million pounds tax-payers have had to fork out for a contest re-run. Epitome of Tory entitlement! Interview @Brian4PCC instead @BBCWiltshire #WiltshirePCC

Brian Mathew is @LibDems candidate for the re-run of the Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner election This re-run was caused by Tories fielding an ineligible candidate & is costing the tax-payer around £1.5 million. #VoteBrian4PCC https://t.co/N31rglV5Gp

The PM can wear his England shirt and string up flags all he wants, but any true England fan would also support our players in their fight against racism. https://t.co/s7FsKCl0bz

Looking forwards we want to see a citizens advisory group to be created, bringing together key figures from all Swindon heritage and cultural groups. This will give experts and the public a voice when deciding on the next steps to enhancing our cultural and heritage assets.

However, the solution to this problem is not closing them completely , while we wait for a mythical cultural quarter to be built. Instead we want to see public access to the SMAG continued until a new location has been selected.

With this in mind we must raise our concerns that both SMAG and the Museum of Computing (MoC) have been left to rot by the current administration. Their current locations are not fit for purpose and both lack accessibility. This is a direct effect of the Tory funding cuts.

Our position has always been and remains that SMAG must be reopened ASAP. We believe this to be in the best interest of all Swindonians and visitors.

Firstly, the conduct of the cabinet member was entirely inappropriate and we applaud his resignation in the hope a new member is appointed who wants to see Swindon's culture thrive.

Our candidate Joe Polson had an excellent day out talking to more people in Priory Vale ahead of the #byelection on Thursday. A lot of conversations highlighting local concerns and a lack of trust in the current administration. #Swindon #Swindonian #Council #Community #Engage
