4/ Methods.We conducted an experiment in Nairobi, where participants were randomly assigned to a condition that triggered family load-related thoughts. They then performed either a manual or cognitive task, allowing us to observe productivity effects.

3/ Key Findings.🔹The family load reduces productivity for women, but only in manual tasks, not in cognitively demanding ones. 🔹 Men’s productivity remains unchanged, but they shift job preferences toward safer, lower-paid jobs. 🔹 Income losses for women persist.

2/ Why is this important?.While gender pay gaps are often attributed to job type and hours worked, we explore a hidden factor: the mental burden of household responsibilities, which may influence productivity and job selection.
