Providing these benefits sends a clear message: we value the sacrifices our officers make, and we’re committed to building a balanced, supportive environment for those who protect our city.

This essential policy not only ensures that those who serve us daily have the time and resources to support their own families during critical times but also strengthens our police department by helping to attract and retain qualified, committed individuals.

This powerful insight from Dr. Austin at today's Board of Supervisors meeting challenges common misconceptions about immigration. Data consistently shows that immigrants contribute positively to the safety and well-being of our communities.

San Jose State’s season may be measured in the end by wins and losses on the scoreboard, but the winners are clearly this exclusive team and the losers those who choose to forfeit rather than engage in fair athletic competition.

That should be the end of any attention to the members of the team based on gender identity. Discrimination and prejudice should have no place in society or sports, yet this college team must be accompanied by armed security and suffer ugly and sometimes threatening comments.

I believe it is important that the Spartans know that they have a great community supporting them. Spartan officials have determined the team adheres to the university’s non-discrimination policy and that everyone on the volleyball team satisfies NCAA eligibility requirements.

One of the Spartan players identifies as transgender. Citing that fact, several opposing teams chose to forfeit their games against San Jose State rather than compete against them.

Over the past few weeks, the worlds of college sports and politics have collided and placed the women’s volleyball team from San Jose State squarely in the middle of the debate over transgender rights.
