Everything’s open: models, code, and the recipe to reproduce the pipeline. If you’re working on another region, you can reuse it and swap in your own data sources.

We evaluated 31 languages; Sunflower-32B led in 24 for X→English and the 14B variant trailed by a narrow margin. Details are in the paper. The results reflect tuning for local languages rather than scale alone.

Most of what we needed wasn’t online. We worked with the Makerere University School of Languages, local teachers, translators, and community archivists to collect and verify text. Together we digitized out-of-print books and transcribed more than 500 hours of radio from Simba FM

We built Sunflower by adapting Qwen-3 and instruction-tuning it for Ugandan languages. The target tasks are practical: translation and everyday question-answering that people actually need.
