Driving through the Brecon Beacons tonight. Was expecting a few by-election posters, but surprised to see what looked like a Brexit Party bus, crashed into a hedge. Got out to check all was ok. No one around, just an abandoned bus, doors open, side-on, blocking a lay-by...
If you've ever danced to Get Down On It, Jungle Boogie, Celebration, Ladies Night, Summer Madness, Fresh... raise a glass to the funky soul legend Ronald Bell, founding member of Kool and The Gang. Thanks for the fabulous floor-fillers.

Remembering Stuart Cable, who would have turned 50 today. Former Stereophonics drummer,
@BBCRadioWales
presenter and just one of those life-affirming guys, whose candle burned bright. Hard to believe you left us 10 years ago next month.
If you've ever sung or danced to ‘Smalltown Boy’ raise a glass to Steve Bronski tonight. A powerful and groundbreaking anthem from Bronski Beat. 🙏🏼

Spent much of the last few weeks in hospital saying goodbye to my dad, Phil.
Heartbroken, but grateful to be able to share this time together.
Thinking of all the people over the last two years, who'd have given anything to have those precious last days with loved ones. 💔
Steve Wright’s shoes were always big to fill. Liza Tarbuck doing Wrighty proud with an emotional Sunday Love Songs, under the saddest circumstances. The power of radio to make people feel they’ve lost a close friend. 📻

Remembering BBC Wales Sport legend, Bob Humphrys.
He’d watch his boy playing for Whitchurch High, and noticed Jamie’s pal was ‘one to watch’.
As a family friend, he took the promising teenager to Southampton for trials.
Bob, you’d have been so proud of Gareth Bale. ⚽️
Sad news about Mike Yarwood. So soon after Michael Parkinson.
Household names from an era when several million of us watched their TV shows. Feels like we’re saying goodbye to a huge part of the 70s and 80s. 📺
Hard to believe we lost Stuart Cable ten years ago today. The former Stereophonics drummer and
@BBCRadioWales
presenter would have turned 50 last month. Just one of those life-affirming guys, whose candle burned bright, and left us too soon.

Happy St David's Day - Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!🏴🌼
It's also the start of meteorological Spring... although that feels more like April Fool's Day!

📻 Truly the end of an era - as Ken Bruce leaves Radio 2.
A familiar friend, wise but sharp-witted. A voice of reason - who makes radio sound effortless and easier than it is.
Felt lucky to cross paths working at Wogan House. A broadcasting legend. 🎙
#KenBruce

Police were helpful - didn't think it was a crash or an accident, possibly a bizarre publicity stunt - but were investigating. Prior to this, my most interesting by-election spot of the day were these pro-Brexit posters covered by Welsh independence posters in Builth Wells.
After being called to hospital to say goodbye to my dying dad, I wasn’t looking forward to this day. But thanks to great NHS doctors and nurses in Hereford, Leominster and Llandrindod - and a medical miracle - I feel beyond lucky to share Father’s Day with Phil. 🙏🏼
#GiftedTime
We’ve been expecting this for a while, but still heartbreaking when it happens. So sad to say goodbye to Phil Charles - husband, father and grandfather.
Fondly remembered by many as their teacher, town councillor and bowling buddy. We’ll miss you terribly, dad. 💔
⏰Just been reminded the clocks go back this weekend, and that five years ago today I made this live televisual cock-up. Have a laugh at my expense... 🙈
Simply the saddest news about Steve Wright - one of our greatest ever radio presenters.
Loved working with Steve in studio - wrote the music news for his afternoon show on Radio 2. Took such a talent to make it all sound so effortless. RIP, radio royalty. 📻
#SteveWright
Just want to say a massive thank you to everyone in the cardiac care unit at Hereford County Hospital looking after my dad, Phil. You've made a tough situation much more bearable with your fantastic nursing care. Thanks
@WyeValleyNHS
. ❤️
The saddest news about Shane MacGowan. The Pogues’ ‘Fairytale of New York’ sounding more bittersweet than ever this Christmas. Forever a reminder of Shane and Kirsty - two talented artists taken too young. 💔
#ShaneMacGowan
Don't want to worry you, Daily Express - but these longer, colder nights with an increased risk of frost are thanks to a seasonal phenomenon known as 'Autumn'. 🍂
Hard to believe it's 35 years this weekend! Great documentary celebrating Live Aid on BBC2 now. Seen this a few times, but realise it's quite old now, as so many of the contributors are no longer with us... 🎸
#LiveAid
Remember how powerful Sinéad O’Connor’s debut was to young girls watching
#TOTP
.
That Mandinka performance helped change the message - from ‘girls get on by dancing in skimpy outfits’ to ‘you can be bold, beautiful and appreciated as a superb songwriter’.
Farewell to radio royalty. One of my jobs at Radio 2 was to write the music news for Steve Wright.
Loved visiting his studio every day - takes one hell of a talent to make it all sound effortless and much easier than it is.
Serious endin’ of an era… no G.📻

A debut performance for Sparks at

Worked here for 21 years... and never experienced this! A power cut has taken

off air. We're standing in a dark studio ready to go live as soon as it comes back...
Turning 50 is a bit of a milestone. So set myself a challenge - to pick up the violin again after many years. 🎻
Celebrated by playing Dexys and Madness live with fab ska band 2Rude. A night to remember with family and friends. Embrace the half century and enjoy yourself! 🏁

Sad news about David Soul. A TV favourite for Starsky and Hutch.
But ‘Don’t Give Up on Us’ and ‘Silver Lady’ also made him the biggest selling pop star of 1977 in the UK.
A true superstar of the seventies.

Catching up on some interesting reading/speculation/conspiracy theories over Sunday morning coffee! Been sent these photos from
@RodneyBerman
- it now looks like it's been towed away from near Nant Ddu Lodge in the Beacons towards Cardiff.
☀️ Lovely to bump into Ruth from ITV Weather on a night out in Cardiff.
📹 Nothing like that scene from Anchorman - where rival channel crews rock up and cause chaos!
Some news stops you in your tracks. Unbelievably sad to hear Christine McVie has died at the age of 79.
Little Lies, Songbird, You Make Loving Fun - just a few of the classics from Fleetwood Mac’s phenomenal singer-songwriter. 💔

Hard to believe Blondie's 'Parallel Lines' turns 40 this month! 🎉
'Heart of Glass', 'One Way or Another', 'Hanging on the Telephone', 'Picture This', 'Sunday Girl'... so many classics. 🎸
Oh, and one of the most iconic album covers ever!👌
Happy 78th birthday to the queen of punk and new wave! Here’s Debbie Harry, casually knocking out the rap from Rapture a fortnight ago at Cardiff Castle. Fantastic for any flippin’ age!

Sad to hear about Annie Nightingale. A trailblazer for women in the music industry.
As the first female DJ on Radio 1, her passion and knowledge for music shone through.
Goodbye to the girl with the perfectly timed “hi”.

Good scheduling by Sky Arts. ‘Record On: The Specials’ is on at 9pm tonight. A new documentary celebrating one of our most influential bands.
What a great way to pay tribute to the late Terry Hall, on what would have been his 65th birthday.

Well, high pressure's building, southerly winds draw up warmer air from the Med, temperatures rising...

It’s 25 years since I joined the BBC. Can’t quite believe it, but the faded work pass confirms the passage of time. Celebrated the occasion by getting a new one. 🎉
Duffy has posted a harrowing account of what she's endured over the last decade. Duffy, you are a phenomenal, brave young woman who is adored by so many. I hope you find happiness and bring more music to the world. And get the justice you deserve. 💔
🏴 WAAAAALES!!! All the pre-match nerves. All the talk of Australia’s fight back… 🇦🇺
If anyone *dared* place a bet on a 30+ point win for Wales… I hope you are quids in tonight! 💰

I’ve had better Friday nights. Feeling full of cold with Covid. Made a bit easier with hot lemon and honey… and a decent

The final demolition of BBC Wales Broadcasting House in Llandaff, Cardiff.
Hard not to feel sad, watching your workplace for more than 20 years reduced to rubble.
Bye-bye Broadcasting House. Monday is my last day at BBC Llandaff. Our final Breakfast TV bulletins, before we move to Cardiff Central Square. Excuse the self-indulgence, but as I've spent half my life working here, thought I'd share a few random behind-the-scenes memories...

Fab reunion in London with pals from the Cardiff School of Journalism. Can't believe it's 25 years since we started out as keen young things. Might spot a few familiar faces here!

Lovely report about our late dad, Phil Charles, in the local paper. Touched by tributes from friends and colleagues in the Mid Wales Journal. Memories mean a lot when you lose loved ones.
Utterly heartbreaking news about Terry Hall.
The Talisman of 2-Tone. The frontman of one of the most powerful unifying forces in pop music.
From The Specials, Fun Boy Three and Colourfield to Rock Against Racism. You meant so much to so many of us. Goodnight, Terry. 💔
Glad to join the club, along with the majority in Wales, who have now had the Covid jab! Thanks to the helpful team at Splott Vaccination Centre, Cardiff. Feel a sense of hope after such a long year. 🙏🏽

So sad to hear about Janice Long. One of the few women on radio in the 80s, her passion and knowledge for music was so influential for female listeners. A privilege to work with her later at Radio 2. And a pioneer to the end at

Such sad news about Karl Wallinger. One of our finest songwriters, from Prestatyn to The Waterboys, World Party and beyond.
With environmental awareness at the heart of Goodbye Jumbo, Put The Message In The Box remains a peerless pop song.

Brilliant stuff from Bethany Shriever - young teaching assistant, the underdog who had to crowdfund her BMX training - who goes on to win Olympic Gold. Now set to be a superstar! 🥇

Big fan of this event - brilliant to see thousands of runners, spectators and fundraisers en route.
I’m running for

📻 Bit baffled why radio stations stop playing Christmas songs by Boxing Day.
Sure, they should be a no-no in November. But happy to hear festive cheer in that lull between Christmas and New Year. 🎄

Portmeirion. Shame that Italianate architecture is ‘hidden away’. Would have made a great backdrop for a 60s TV series. Or a stunning setting for a music festival...
Such sad news about Meat Loaf. Just a few months after the passing of Jim Steinman. Together they created a phenomenon - and leave us with the legacy that was 'Bat out of Hell'. Truly the end of an era.

Working in the city centre made me more aware of the homelessness problem in Cardiff. Tweeted about it a while back and

Aah, it's one of those days. RIP JJ Williams and Bobby Ball... both massive crowd pleasers in their own field. Legends who remind you how short life is. 💔
The end of the road. For some, the end of an era. ⚽️

Decided to embrace turning fifty! Thanks for the warm wishes, folks. Lifted my spirits on a cold January day… otherwise known as eight years to the day Bowie died.⚡️
A sad week for music. Now we say farewell to Martin Duffy. If you’ve ever sung or danced to Loaded, Moving On Up, Rocks et al… raise a glass to the powerhouse behind the keyboards for Primal Scream. 💔
Hurray, it's March 1st. Happy start of meteorological spring, everyone. 🌼

Fascinating Paula Yates doc on Channel 4. An intoxicating flashback to 80s and 90s pop culture… and a sad reminder how sexist and racist the tabloids could be.

For those of us of a certain age, The Wombles, Doctor Who and The Railway Children were a big part of our childhood and a golden age of children’s TV.

Bernard Cribbins - thanks for the wonderful memories. 📺

Farewell to the charismatic frontman of Cockney Rebel. Something about Steve Harley made him one of our most lovable pop stars.
Come Up And See Me, Judy Teen, Mr Soft, Here Comes The Sun… simply some of the greatest sounds of the 70s.
#SteveHarley
Farewell Judith Durham, who has died at the age of 79. From 'The Carnival is Over' to 'Georgy Girl', those crystal-clear vocals for The Seekers, made her one of the most distinctive pop voices of the 60s.

Hola from the highest point in Spain - Mount Teide in Tenerife. There’s often snow at the summit (3718m) in January, but too mild for that this year. ⛰
Talking bucket-lists with my seventy-something-year-old mum, who's recovering from cancer.
Wasn't expecting her to say 'seeing the Rolling Stones live', as it would make her feel young and carefree again.
Satisfaction? Hopefully! 🤞✅

Farewell, to one of Canada’s finest. Was introduced to that rock blues voice on ‘Somewhere Down The Crazy River’… then discovered ‘The Weight’, ‘The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down’ and the brilliant back-catalogue of The Band.
RIP Robbie Robertson. 💔

Such a tourist, I know... but I love an open top bus. And the one in Cork is ace. 🇮🇪
Great views of the city - and if you happen upon a driver called Kath - you get a bonus alternative Jo Brand style commentary. 😂
Much as I love these old

shows, there’s a lot of chaff with the wheat. So when ‘Weather With You’ comes on, it just makes you appreciate the marvellous Crowded House all the more. ‘Woodface’ is one of the greatest albums ever made.
