The fact New Scientist even needs to ask the question "Should we incinerate a planet for treasure?" suggests humanity has taken a wrong turn somewhere. 🌍🔥🪙. Ignoring that 💎are only valuable because of their scarcity tells us something about the state of #journalism. 🤦♂️

Putting the sovereign on a tiny raft and bringing a very strong magnet close to it, the coin was repelled and so it may indeed be gold!. I am so grateful to my mum for everything she did for our family and the wider community. Without her there wouldn’t be a Physics in the

Everything is diamagnetic – meaning everything is very weakly repelled by magnetic fields. 🧲. It’s such a tiny effect though that if a material shows any other type of magnetism then the other type of effect dominates, and you don’t see the diamagnetism. 2/4.

My dear mum passed away in late September - today would have been her 84th birthday 💔. Sorting through her possessions we found what appeared to be a gold sovereign, and I was finally able to do an experiment that I'd always wanted to 🥹. You see, gold is diamagnetic…. 1/4

There is something deeply mendacious about calling for the tax burden to be cut…. Then using falling revenues to claim a benefit or service is unaffordable. ‘Think tanks’ must be required to be transparent about their funding’s ultimate source and their political biases. 🤥.

Very much worth a read. (@jessralston2's takedown, obviously!). Somewhere in all the anti-ev/heat pump/renewable energy stories, there is a piece for an investigative journalist to write. Who is coordinating the disinformation, who is funding the campaign, why are individual.
Some v misleading claims about heat pumps in this @Telegraph comment piece by Robert Taylor. It fails to grasp the key point about heat pumps - they lead to energy security. Reliance on gas boilers is a major reason we were so badly hit by the gas crisis. Here's the rundown. 🧵
