This has all the markings of a human rights crisis. As Justice Sotomoyer wrote in her dissent, it also sends a clear and unsettling message to immigrant communities nationwide that the government is “free to deport anyone anywhere without notice or an opportunity to be heard.”

The SCOTUS ruling overturns a nationwide injunction that required the federal government to give immigrants advance notice and the chance to raise objections before shipping them across the globe. Now, the Trump admin can continue these cruel deportations without due process.

In the past few months alone, the U.S. has disappeared hundreds of people to Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, and South Sudan — countries that most of them have never been to. They are sent to prisons notorious for human rights abuses and dropped into the middle of war zones.

No one deserves to lose their lives due to political scapegoating. And by continuing to tell the story of Vincent Chin, we can start to confront the racism and xenophobia that threaten our communities today.

Not only does political scapegoating threaten our civil rights, but it also puts our physical safety at risk by fueling acts of hate against people of color of every immigration status.

The same racist fearmongering that led to Chin's death is still present in U.S. politics. From the surge of anti-immigrant rhetoric to hate-fueled policies, Trump and other leaders continue to frame immigrant communities as “spies” and “criminals.”
