The reported shootings of Asian American women on Tuesday in Atlanta is an unspeakable tragedy – for the families of the victims first and foremost, but also for the AAPI community — which has been reeling from high levels of racial discrimination.
Stop AAPI Hate is proud to announce our latest national report, measuring anti-Asian hate incidents from March 2020-Feb 2021. In the last 12 months, we have tracked 3,795 hate incident reports from APIs in all 50 states and DC.

Thank you,
@BTS_twt
for using your global platform to raise awareness around anti-Asian hate — and what can be done to keep our loved ones safe.
Few details have been released, including whether or not the shootings were related or motivated by hate. But right now there is a great deal of fear and pain in the Asian American community that must be addressed.
A few trends worth noting:
💬Verbal harassment makes up 68% of hate incidents. Physical assault makes up 11%.
👩🏻Women are 2.3 times more likely to report hate incidents.
🌉45% of reports originated in California, making it the first in the nation for hate incident reports.
Amid the devastation of the recent shooting, it is inspiring to see Asian Americans – and others – coming together to support one another and the people of

The motive is unclear, but no matter why or who, the undeniable truth is that Asian communities are hurting from this mass shooting. As a group that represents Asian Americans, it’s important to acknowledge moments of shared pain. We see you, we hear you & we will heal together.

Four of the Texas shooting victims were Asian. Most were people of color. And three were children. The shooter—with alleged neo-Nazi ties—left at least 8 dead and 7 wounded. There are no words to describe the devastating impacts of hate in this moment.
California just passed a historic bill that will bring Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander American histories into K-12 curriculum. This is a huge victory for students, teachers, and educators alike — and will help confront hate and bigotry in and out of the classroom.
Thank you Governor

We are shocked and devastated by the shooting in Seattle this week that took the life of a pregnant Korean American woman, Eina Kwon, and her baby. Our deepest condolences go out to her loved ones, including her injured husband, and the Seattle community.
We created Stop AAPI Hate to capture the rise of hate incidents in Asian communities, but anti-Asian attacks are rooted in a longstanding history of scapegoating. Our op-ed in

When Asian Americans are asked, "Where are you from?" the implication is, "You're not from here."
This is just one example of the stereotype of the 'perpetual foreigner' that contributes to anti-Asian hate.
Says Stop AAPI Hate Cofounder Dr. Russell Jeung, unless something changes, "there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for the pandemic, but not for AAPIs."

Our hearts break for the victims of the Indianapolis shooting, four of whom were members of the Sikh community, in a facility known for its large Sikh workforce. This is a moment of intense pain for the Sikh community, which has too often been the target of bigotry. 1/2

September 11, 2001 will live on in history as a day that visited unimaginable loss and irreparable sorrow on people and families across the country. For some of us — including Muslims, Arabs, South Asians and Sikhs — the subsequent rise of Islamophobia has left permanent scars.🧵
We mourn the death of Jasmer Singh, a Sikh elder who recently died after being assaulted in an apparent hate-motivated attack in Queens, NYC. As we witnessed after 9/11, intensifying anti-Muslim & anti-Arab rhetoric is harming South Asians, Sikhs, Arabs and Muslims across the US
“He just remarks about my father’s appearance,” the grieving son said.
“Attacking … pointing on his turban ... some kind of hate on his mind.”
People saw Singh try to call cops on the 30-year-old, who had a suspended license: “No police!”
This attack was fueled by racism & hate. We’re shocked a Texas official publicly said today that race “didn’t matter” in the shooting. The denial & silence of leaders in TX & beyond echoes the downplaying of race as a motivator in the Atlanta spa shootings
It’s our favorite time of year! Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander

More than a century before Trump and his supporters vowed to "Keep America Great," White segregationists were striving to keep California White. They passed the state's flagrantly anti-Asian "Alien Land Law" on this day 110 years ago in 1913. An

Stop AAPI Hate mourns the death of 14 year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, a Black child who was chased, shot in the back and killed after being wrongly accused of shoplifting by Rick Chow, a gas station owner in Columbia, South Carolina. We wholly condemn this act of violence.🧵
A South Carolina convenience store owner has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Cyrus Carmack-Belton, a 14-year-old whom he falsely accused of shoplifting, chased and shot in the back on Sunday night, the authorities said.

We’re appalled that Pelosi used an anti-Asian slur against protestors. Whether or not her allegations of their connections to China or Russia are true, this type of rhetoric is rattling for many Asians in America who have been threatened with the same racist phrase.
