For years, my father fell asleep watching a documentary about a man who lived a solitary life in a hand-built cabin in Alaska. This is my strange poem about that strange nightly ritual. Many thanks to THINK journal for giving it a home.

Deborah Warren reviews a new translation of the Aeneid by Scott McGill and Susannah Wright. "McGill and Wright explain how their pentameter line manages to lose one hexameter foot without sacrificing any content: about every fifth line they allow themselves an extra one." More👇

"One of the rarest gifts in modern poetry is that for narrative. The legacies of imagism and modernist fragmentation seem to have stifled the special talent that can tell stories in measure." --Robert Morgan, "Midquest and the Gift of Narrative" (1997)

"Although most of Hume's influence has been in creating doubts and leading thinkers to question accepted religious views, he also played an important role in the development of fideistic orthodoxy, culminating in Kierkegaard's views." —R.H. Popkin, Introduction to the Dialogues

Some small part of my parenting has been successful: my 14 yr old son came up to me this afternoon with a huge grin on his face. “It’s finally December!! You know what that means?!” I was thinking hmm, Christmas, school vacation…. until he cranked up “Long December” 🤩🎵

The humanities had already lowered its defences against AI when it became enamoured with the metaphor of the cyborg in the 80s. A robust humanism, refurbished for the 21st century, is what we need (of course, there is good humanism and bad humanism).

Greatly enjoyed this discerning and engaging piece on Frost (and what sounds like a far-fetched/-flung critical reading) by @clarebucknell, one of the best in the business. Thank you, @LRB:
