@buzzworddujour Cheetahs, caracals and servals are very tameable. Leopard cats were domesticated in neolithic China but were displaced by housecats later on. (Cheetahs aren't true big cats (Pantherinae), they're the biggest small cat (Felinae).).

Oh boy, do I have an answer for this. It's because a honeymoon is consumption, but a wedding is an investment. Specifically, you're paying for a magickal ritual to redefine your social position, which requires the presence of your community.
Why would you have a $30,000 wedding when you can just get married at the courthouse and have a $30,000 honeymoon instead?.

@GwenNorth14 they are good cats but they can also maim or kill you pretty easily. (also they're very fragile).

Remember that study that said 12% of the population eats 50% of the beef? And it turned out that they meant in a given 24 hour period? Eat a burger on Tuesday, suddenly you're in the 12%. Have a salad on Wednesday, you're in the 88%. This is that, but for cancer. Come on, man.
1% of people are responsible for 24% of the health spending in America and 5% of people are responsible for just over half.

Off-topic but the cat statistic is inflated by a small group of ornithologists and ecologists who have a long-term project to exterminate all domestic cats. No, I'm not making that up.
The fearmongering about wind turbines & bird deaths needs to stop:. "in meeting the Biden admin's admirable goal of deploying 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030, bird deaths from collisions could rise to more than a million per year.". Cats kill 2.4 ***billion*** birds per year!

Angry People in my replies like "lololol I could take a cheetah with one punch how DARE you" and then actual cat owners are like "my darling 4 lb cat Muffinsocks strips the flesh from my bones twice a day as it is" (cat owners know the truth)
my cat is like 14 pounds and he still is constantly accidentally ripping my flesh. we trim his front claws but not the back. he still manages to fuck my shit up so I believe it. I would have a big cat too if I knew I wouldn't get sliced to ribbons. theyre XXXL kitties.

A whole bunch of Leading Scientists with Professional Headshots on Twitter Dot Com are extremely buttmad about this quote. Genius is a dime a dozen, they are saying. Science is about project management and filling out form!. Well, Science is about that now, anyway.
I was reading 2023 Nobel laureate Katalin Kariko's book, Breaking Through. She was brutally honest about the academic system in US. And, here is an example section from her book.

@Nightmarish_Vis By 'tame' I mean 'raised to live around humans without extreme anxiety'. By 'domesticated' I mean 'selectively bred for generations to live with and be useful to humans'. A feral dog is domesticated but not tame, a pet ocelot on Instagram is tame but not domesticated.

Some people are arguing about definitions, so to be clear, 'tame' and 'domesticated' are two different things:
@Nightmarish_Vis By 'tame' I mean 'raised to live around humans without extreme anxiety'. By 'domesticated' I mean 'selectively bred for generations to live with and be useful to humans'. A feral dog is domesticated but not tame, a pet ocelot on Instagram is tame but not domesticated.

Lol san francisco is floating a bill i theorized to @Maarblek 10+ years ago, the law is that you have to get robbed. Forget self defense, "retreating", whatever, no you just literally have to let them rob you or you're the criminal 😂.

Dude was drugging, fucking and blackmailing a 15 year old kid while HIV+, let's not forget. And he had the same righteous/contemptuous affect on Twitter as your average Chapo fan.
the josh kruger conversation went from "haha pro-crime guy got murdered" to "wtf you ghoul" to "wait actually this looks targeted not just random" to, uh, well, _yikes_. vigilante justice is never okay and all the same I don't feel very sorry for him anymore.

Billy Evans was killed in a vehicle attack by a black nationalist. On April 2. Sicknick had a stroke. Smith and Liebengood killed themselves. This is bizarre.
Pelosi held a moment of silence for 4 law enforcement officers who died because of #January6th:. • Brian Sicknick.• Jeffrey Smith.• Howard Liebengood.• Billy Evans

There are two ways to grow rice in Taiwan. One is to grow rice. The other is to manufacture microprocessors, send them away on ships, and wait for the ships to return with rice.
This is insane. The Taiwanese government is paying farmers to NOT grow rice because they need the water for AI chip manufacturing instead. We're prioritizing AI over feeding people during a drought.

The crack about actuaries is the precise moment I flipped the bozo bit on Graeber. It wasn't entirely clear to him what they were good for, because he couldn't be fucked to find out. Asshole.
I was just reminded that in Graeber's original "bullshit jobs" essay, he listed ska musicians and science fiction writers as more important than private equity CEOs, actuaries, and bailiffs.

@LookAtMyMeat1 Given that the Monkey King myth cycle is about the encounter between Chinese and Indian societies, the only way it can be "Lacking in inclusivity and diversity" if one defines that phrase to mean "no black people".

People are (predictably) missing the point of this thoughtful poast. Islam was, in fact, a pretty significant advance over what came before, because pre-Islamic Arab society was a nightmare.
Increasingly convinced that yeah, a chunk of the human race actually needs a form of Sharia Law. That is, like, stone rapists to death in public. People who blame Islam for these issues don't understand, Islam was/is a *moderating* force. A software to "civilize" humans who are.

@KindaAnonym Ever see a stray tomcat? They tear the crap out of each other, but at least they're evenly matched. Cats are *much* faster than humans, and if you accidentally trigger a pounce reflex you can get mauled before you know it.

In retrospect, tattooing "bad guy, just a total monster, I should be locked up immediately" on your face turned out to be an unwise fashion trend among bad guys who should be locked up immediately.
I wish there was more scholarly work on why exactly Bukele’s crackdown was so successful. Latin American governments—including the government of El Salvador—have elected “tough on crime” leaders before! It would be good to know why this time it seems to have worked.

a FRENCH man directing a movie entirely inspired by north african and southwest asian history and culture, no amazigh in sight ESPECIALLY for the fremen, no arabs in sight, just your american hollywood popular faces, and on top of that the main character is played by a zionist.

siiigh. We've been here before, but:. Every few years, there's a big Study that purports to show this. If you dig into the details, there's a lot of questionable classification, but the main issue is the way US prison gangs are identified by themselves and by the authorities.
.@AOC calls out the source of the political violence in America, "There is absolutely no doubt that the data shows that the vast majority of incidents of domestic terror come from white nationalism. And that we are really, truly facing the environment of fascism."

One weird framing trick that jumps out at you once you notice it:. If a particular social change X is considered desirable by the elite, they will promote "First Y to do X" stories, which imply there will be many more Y soon. "Florida first state to ban CRT", not so much.

The original Muppets came in random rainbow colors specifically to sidestep racial identification. This is incredibly regressive.
Meet Ji-Young — the first Asian American muppet on "Sesame Street.". She is Korean American and has two passions: rocking out on her electric guitar and skateboarding. She'll be formally introduced in a special that drops on Thanksgiving.
