A lot of skepticism out there are the Carney-Smith deal, but I think Smith got a good deal for Alberta, she thinks that too. I think you will see real progress within a year, much to the chagrin of David Eby and the Mud Hut Brigade.

8/ The MOU doesn’t guarantee a new pipeline, but paves the way if there is a commercial case and is a huge reversal of a decade of Liberal climate policy that was designed to leave oil and gas in the ground. This seems like a pretty substantial win.

7/ There’s lots of details to work out on TIER, but what can’t be forgotten is that in 2021 the SCC confirmed federal jurisdiction to set a benchmark price on carbon and implement a backstop. To work with that and in return get rid of the CER and emissions cap - a win. ⬇️

6/ Some folks say that AB capitulated because it agreed to increase the industrial price on carbon. But we’ve had an Alberta price on carbon since 2007 and in 2022 Alberta increased the headline price under TIER to $17O by 2030, though paused it in 2025. ⬇️
