Our findings show that in FND, heartbeat counting accuracy correlates with insula and ventromedial prefrontal cortex activations, while interoceptive trait prediction error correlates inversely. These correlations contextualize observed between-group activation differences.

Principal component analysis revealed distinct patterns of cingulo-insular co-activations and co-deactivations in default mode network regions, distinguishing FND patients from healthy controls during the task.

Our study found decreased activations in key interoceptive and attentional brain regions (right anterior insula, bilateral anterior cingulate cortices, & temporo-parietal junction) in FND patients when focusing on heartbeats vs. healthy controls.
