Still not enough snow for snow flies out there, so started a little side project in the meantime to make everything as fun as collecting snow flies through employee gamification.

Here is a helpful cheat sheet of the daily activity patterns of foraging invertebrates on Mt. Rainier. Based on summer time observations, which is why there are no snow flies. Mann, Edwards, and Tara (1980). DOI: 10.1080/00040851.1980.12004194

A dramatic change in the weather is expected this weekend, bringing not just rain but snow to the park. By Saturday night, the snow level is forecasted to drop to 4000 ft, well below the elevation of Paradise at 5400 ft. 1/4 NPS Photo of Paradise, 10/21/2019. -kl

Attention all western USA mountain-goers (esp those in MT, WY, UT, WA, ID): please help us find snow algae patches for sampling for our new @nsf -funded project! Here's a handy form to use to report your sighting. Please RT and spread the word. https://t.co/RUP9M2gM70

Snow fly season is over, so now it's control experiment season! We are now looking for local volunteers @UW to help us collect other crane flies: these are the big endearing goofballs that resemble an oversized mosquito. Drop us a note if you happen to trap one.

@SnowFlyProject We found Chionea in our buried pitfall traps in SW Virginia this winter. Really fascinating insects!

we thought that snow flies had retired for the season, but looks like there are still some late season stragglers relishing the winter conditions! vid courtesy of @KameronDHarris.

We received our first shipment of snow flies from the Yukon this week! We are running behavioral experiments right now to measure their cold tolerance. After that, we will use DNA barcoding to determine the species of each individual animal. https://t.co/jn7wq7z5LW

Sprightly is an excellent adjective to describe snow flies. They are also jaunty and obdurate.

Saw this spritely snowfly scampering along in the snow in British Columbia in mid January… these insects so active in the snow always amazes me ⁦@SnowFlyProject

This is closest thing to a snow fly we've seen in the past few weeks in Western Washington. Fluctuating conditions (big mid winter warm up followed by a cold snap) seem to take a toll on adult snow fly populations.

obvs, snow flies are not true bugs, but that's a totally different issue that @nytimes refuses to address
