Before everyone gets excited by this, it is not authors who benefit but publishers, they are the legal owner of the rights and what I hear is that they will offer 20% to authors. So a mega payday for publishers: a few bills paid for authors: a slap on the wrist for tech. Yay
Fresh on the heels of the landmark Anthropic settlement, Apple was sued in a class action today, for essentially the same thing. Authors are suing Apple for training its Apple Intelligence language models on datasets "including thousands of pirated books."

This image from the 1903 excavation directed by M R James, shows the remains of abbots of St Edmundsbury lying in their coffins in the chapter house. After their discovery, the coffins were given new covers and the abbots were left to rest under the grass of Abbey Gardens.
