On a crisp fall night, you can see all the purples and blues of the Milky Way with your naked eye as you listen to elk bugle in the distance.

Grand Canyon still feels like home in a lot of ways. I met my wife there. Our oldest child was born and raised there. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever known.

I spent a lot of time on that rock, looking across at those lights. Honestly, there have been some hard days lately where I’ve wished I could go back there and have a think.

There’s a particular rock along that trail I was always drawn to. I’d sit there and stare out across the shadows of the canyon. To my right: Bright Angel and El Tovar. To my left: just a glimmer of light from Grand Canyon Lodge.

I went through a lot during those years at the Canyon. Whenever I needed to clear my head, I’d walk the Rim Trail toward Hermit’s Rest—usually after dark, when no one else was around.

In the off-season, folks from the North Rim would come work with us for a few months while their side of the Big Ditch was closed. Then, come spring, they would head back.

Before I moved back to Texas and changed careers, I spent 8 years living and working at Grand Canyon South Rim. I started at Yavapai Lodge’s front desk, but in winter I'd often pick up shifts at Bright Angel Lodge.

I can't imagine what the visitors and employees at Grand Canyon North Rim went through evacuating last night. Reports say 50–80 buildings were lost to the Dragon Bravo wildfire, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge. 🧵.
