New paper alert ⏰ Groundwater recharge was >200% greater in the north-central Mojave Desert during the last glacial maximum
Water-table changes in the southern Great Basin, USA, over the last 350,000 years are 3-4 times as sensitive to recharge changes during drier interglacial than wetter glacial conditions. @SimonSteidle @Speleo_Katee

Turning the Devils Hole water table record into a record of recharge. It has implications for groundwater availability under a changing climate - for the arid Nevada desert - but I would also be very delighted to see this approach turning out useful for other water table records.

New research article: 230Th ∕ U isochron dating of cryogenic cave carbonates
gchron.copernicus.org
Abstract. Cryogenic cave carbonates (CCCs) are a type of speleothem, typically dated with 230Th/U disequilibrium methods, that provide evidence of palaeo-permafrost conditions. In the field, CCCs...

I am happy to share some of our model work connecting groundwater table at Devils Hole and local recharge at #AGU2021 today (session PP43B). Another step towards quantifying the threat of climate change for humans and endemic pupfish. Feedback is welcome! https://t.co/sqb7giwgMn

Caves are awe-inspiring, but it can be difficult to capture their magnificence in photos. Here, pro cave photographer Robbie Shone shows you how.

I am proud to be part of the great team that has produced the first global assessment of noble gas paleotemperatures from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present. Our analysis reveals nearly 6°C LGM continental cooling in low to mid latitudes. (1/5) https://t.co/6if6hGvawo
