I've just received an amazing email from someone who was so inspired to swim more after reading my book he's resigned from his job to take a new one with fewer hours and less travelling. #SwimWildAndFree #OutdoorSwimming #ShamelessPlug

Iβve just completed #TheSharkSwim πββοΈπ¦π£ 12 days and 59 miles around the island of Marthaβs Vineyard, where Jaws was filmed 50 years ago. It's been one of the toughest swims of my life. Cold water, relentless wind, big waves and the constant thought of what might be beneath me.

I was thinking of giving up on Twitter. Glad I checked back in.
Saturday lunchtime is for catching up with all things swimming. A great issue once more team. π @outdoor_swimmer @SimonDGriffiths πββοΈ

Drifting down the river this morning, I passed my phone to a woman I'd never met before and asked her to take a picture. It's come out so much better than any of my selfies.

I wouldn't want to be the River Mole right now. 168 hours of discharge from Leatherhead, 62 from Cobham and 58 from Esher, and all still going. #StormBert has long gone. What's going on @thameswater ?

The moment I spotted a kingfisher while drifting down the Thames in the fog this morning. Unfortunately the photographer stopped filming just before the bird took off and darted across the river.

However cold the water is, remember to smile for the camera.

*DEFRA Consultation: HAVE YOUR SAY ON BATHING WATER REGULATIONS* DEFRA suspended the application process for new bathing water sites in May. I know bathing waters won't solve all pollution problems but they help. And the regulations could be improved. https://t.co/YWIxwqsp47

"I hate to tell you this, but it isn't winter yet." Words of wisdom from a more experienced swimmer after I congratulated myself on a winter swim in November a few years ago. https://t.co/NTGKENyRGs

Swimming outdoors in autumn is glorious, but it's very different to swimming outdoors in the depths of winter.

In @outdoor_swimmer 's newsletter, we asked about swimmers' preferences for neoprene accessories for winter dipping. We had such a diversity of responses from around the world that we've shared them in a new article. https://t.co/PknOjoiDgj Where do you stand on gloves & booties?

Obviously, I'm much slower. But I was more interested in the slope of the curve, which runs roughly parallel to Zhanle's. What do you get if you plot your best times on this chart? For more on this, see:
outdoorswimmer.com
Look at the difference in average speed for standard race distances for top swimmers and then compare with your own to see if you're more of a sprinter or long distance swimmer.

In brief, I plotted my best times (converted to m/s) for various distances and compared them with the best times for the current world record holders at 100m (Pan Zhanle) and 1500m (Bobby Finke). World Aquatics has a record of their personal best times over standard distances.

Please indulge my swim nerdery. I've always suspected I'm more of a sprinter than a long-distance swimmer, despite doing lots of long-distance swims and swim training. This graph may confirm my suspicions. (A short thread)

Lots of familiar faces at today's March for Clean Water but I was not expecting to bump into Manhattan Island Swim world record holder Andy Donaldson, who lives in Perth!
