Bit of history in the thread. McAfee threw away the shitty product and bought Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit - one of the best anti-virus products in the world at the time. End of 'invented cyber security ' story.
OK, folks, I hear that John McAfee claims to have invented cyber security. (I don't know; he has blocked me.) Gather 'round the fire, kids, for a short story, because I was around at the time.

Sad news indeed! I spoke with Dr Solomon at a London computer show - early '90s. I was a little baffled by his combination of brusqueness and kindness but his clever advice has stuck with me.

I'm sad I don't still have a pair of Alan's socks to wear in commemoration today: an early marketing gimmick, he told me with glee how Prince Charles once approached with his hand out to shake and he stuffed a pair of socks into it instead

For those who don't know, Dr. Solomon was the founder of S&S International + the inventor of Dr. Solomon's Antivirus Toolkit. He was as foundational to the industry as Mr. McAfee. @McAfee ended up buying the company + his software became the engine that powered it for years.
