As volatility returns and capital searches for “safe” stores of value and potential profit, farmland is the next frontier. Our claim is that the law isn’t just regulating this transition; it’s building it. And that we should be collectively concerned about these effects.

This is not just about pension funds and private equity buying up American farms. This is about legal infrastructure enabling extraction at scale and exacerbating economic and spatial injustice.

We track how farmland is being remade into a financial asset—priced, packaged, and traded—through law and the risks of this transformation as rural places are converted to paper asset classes.
