Anniversaries are always a good moment to pause and reflect. Some thoughts 🔽 on how #HumanRights can help strengthen labour protections for workers in informal employment.
#HumanRightsDay ✊ The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, states that labour rights are indispensable for human dignity. Why do most of these rights still remain out of reach for the 2⃣ billion workers in informal employment? Read + https://t.co/I1u3UHTV4P

Most cities are designed for the elite. We cannot build climate-resilient cities without acknowledging & improving the working & living spaces of workers in informal employment ✊ #UrbanOctober 1/2

#HomeBasedWorkersDay ✊ @HomeNetInt To ensure workers' rights in informal employment are respected, we need to make visible the invisible — and for that, data can be a powerful tool. Home-based workers are present around the 🌎 and are vital to local and global #SupplyChains.

<Late update> @ShaliniWIEGO & I write for @IndianExpress on #Budget2024 #BudgetForViksitBharat Budget misses Cities & Climate Crisis: Viksit Bharat is not possible without liveable Indian cities - 1/10 https://t.co/LQBxWfy2TU

The budget is surprising in its lack of focus on climate action and its impact in cities. This is especially concerning given that India is one of the most impacted countries in the world

HAPs have aided in reducing the casualties due to heatwaves, &this relatively new policy instrument has been increasingly recognised for its importance, but it misses the varied nature of impacts on different vulnerable groups, like workers in the informal economy in cities. 2/12

It is imperative that governments’ plans to combat #heat address the conditions of India's millions of workers so that they are not casualties of climate change. https://t.co/nUUjtXpsPj

Outdoor and informal workers such as construction labourers, delivery drivers, hawkers and vendors are forced to brave the punishing heat to earn a few rupees a day. Their working conditions are...
Workers are doing everything they can to cope with the heat, such as this autowala using a cotton cloth called gamcha to protect himself from the heat. However, is this enough, or do they need systematic support to endure this heat?

In policy measures - First, it is essential to reimagine heat waves as not conventional disaster events, but as prolonged disasters, thereby moving from ad hoc, instruction-based response to linking HAPs with other long-term measures of urban planning & climate action plans. 5/12

Most informal workers are not protected under any health insurance and incur out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatment, which adds to their already shrinking income during the hot months. The cost of business goes up even as the income comes down. 4/12

The richest people, corporations and countries are destroying the world with their huge carbon emissions. Fighting climate change means fighting the inequality crisis. It's time for a planet for the 99% not the 1%. #MakePollutersPay
