It’s not just about creating a better #oklaed where kids can achieve and become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. It’s also about creating change that allows kids to say “I want to be a teacher in Oklahoma”.

So many wait to get mad until it’s about money$. Don’t get me wrong: I’m mad Ryan Walters has misspent & used taxpayer funds as carrots. BUT, I’m furious that his 2 years of rhetoric has created unsafe places for kids while dismantling the support #oklaed districts had available.

This headline feels ironic. Let’s not forget that @GovStitt appoints the SDE Board, who has rubber stamped the actions of RW. Alternative headline: “Encourage disagreement so the fringe can be activated with anger”.

Interesting RW bragged about cutting staff at SDE & now says there aren’t enough. I still have to fulfill sped services regardless of staffing?. The services and knowledge at SDE have declined tremendously. I support @BixbyPSSupt , but who are we running against RW? #oklaed.
It was political suicide for Ryan Walters to go after Bixby Supt. Rob Miller. He pissed off Republican veterans in power and he can’t fix that: “…. we cannot stand by while a respected leader and veteran is insulted and demeaned for simply doing his job,”

Started year 10 as a principal today. On the drive this AM the thought popped in my head, “I get to do this”. This isn’t toxic positivity. We have real outside threats to the flourishing of our children and core of our profession. However, I truly love this profession.

They gave me this tiny clip for Father’s Day, because I’m “strong”. I hope we are always transparent enough for them to see the struggle and reward of continually pursuing a life of health. Hopefully it’s a new root system.

#oklaed research shows it costs $70,000+ to onboard and train a new principal. Oklahoma turns over 20% of principals each year. Of these 50% leave education. That means 10% of our principals are exiting each year without trained succession.
#oklaed Superintendents (especially rural) LISTEN UP!. Principal turnover is an epidemic that hurts our students!. · 73% have held their role for 5 years or less.· 42% of surveyed are planning to leave their schools. It takes 5-7 years to create large scale change at a school.

Historically, 85% FRL rate. It is possible but it takes a lot of intentionality, time, hard work, collective norms, and BELIEF from our team.
In 3 years our team has gone from ~50% staff retention to 90%+. District anonymous survey revealed 90+% feel supported by site admin & culture is positive or extremely +. Formative assessments 2-3x. Every kid has gone to 2-6 field trips. PTA created.

When someone asks me for permission to do something at the school, I’ve stopped answering yes/no and now answer “I trust you”. Empowerment has been a game changer.
