High childcare costs and expensive private rent were major financial burdens for some workers. Participants suggested ways to improve the industry, such as:.1⃣ Greater access to affordable childcare.2⃣ Better regulation of working conditions.3⃣ Ending zero hours contracts.

💸Although workers’ situations varied, most said they were affected by the rising cost of living. Around half of the participants were struggling financially, with some falling into debt or relying on family & friends. Many found it harder to save money or were saving much less.

By the final round of interviews, nearly half of the participants had left the hospitality sector, and others had reduced their working hours. Those who stayed said they did so because they found personal satisfaction in their jobs or had strong social connections at work.

🚨Negative experiences included high staff turnover, a lack of career progression, and jobs that were both physically and emotionally demanding.

What are key factors that make hospitality jobs better or worse for workers? . 💡Positive experiences often came from supportive managers, fair shift schedules, pay transparency and opportunities for training and career growth. .

What were the participants' experiences? .🔹1 in 3 were on zero-hour contracts or had no signed agreement. 🔹By the final phase, nearly half had left the sector, with more reducing their hours. 🔹Only 1 participant was promoted over the course of the research.
