This is my 1st #PhD paper & stepping stone for my other work inc. my #EJP paper. I got my first rejection with this and I’m excited to see it published (& will be happy to see it cited 😇). Shout out to @PlattLucinda & @BerkayOzcan_ who spent ages with me & this work. Thank you🙏.

This suggests that regional anti-immigrant attitudes and individual’s feeling of discrimination are different but complementary measures of destination’s impact on immigrants’ wellbeing/other life outcomes. Use of regional measures helps to avoid endogeneity in models w/ SW. 5/n.

Most interestingly, while immigrants who don’t believe they belong to a #discriminated group have higher reported wellbeing, this does not protect them in regions with anti-immigrant attitudes. All immigrants report lower wellbeing in regions with more hostile attitudes. 4/n

Although using cross-sectional data, this association seems to be moderated by individuals’ length of stay in destinations, suggesting immigrants become more resilient to hostility with time. It would be great to test this using longitudinal data. LMK about dataset ideas? 3/n

Examining 22 EU countries, I show that sub-national variation in non-migrants’/majority attitudes towards immigrants is one of the most prominent explanatory factors of immigrants’ SW, controlling for all usual suspects, e.g., individual SES & regional unemployment. 2/n.

I didn’t find this association on the more granular LAD level. I argue that this might be caused by the mostly urban sample of immigrants and needs to be further investigated.

Interestingly, this association is not driven by the share of the most negative attitudes in the population in the region but by the overall composition of attitudes in each region.

I show that this association is stable to the inclusion of regional deprivation (unemployment), social cohesion, and ethnic composition measures into the models. Interethnic friendship moderates the effect to a degree.

Considering the variation in attitudes, the difference in subjective wellbeing between immigrants living in different regions could be comparable to the differences caused by the most prominent determinants of wellbeing (e.g., unemployment).
