I think by far the biggest critique received from the demo was the weird boundaries, or lack thereof. So I decided to scrap the floating island level design in favor of more expressive levels that encourage exploration without worrying about falling off the stage.
Today's news about the game! I will be releasing two demos, the first is a short teaser demo focusing on exploration and platforming, and will be playable next Saturday!🥳 The second demo (date TBD) will be an entire mock up chapter fully featured, including the battle system!😋
I am happy to announce that Scrap Story: The Paper Prelude, a prequel to the main game, will be coming this fall! Please enjoy the cover art in the meantime🎨
More details coming soon!
Thanks to a couple weeks of grinding and refactoring, the battle system has become more flexible than ever! Characters, abilities, items, ailments, effects, and events can be added with little to no extra coding. This will save a lot of time and headache down the road.
While the overworld is more open and natural looking, battle stages are quite crafty, with pop up books and paper dioramas such as this little wooded area🌱
Wow 10k followers! Never thought the project would grow this big! Thank you to everyone who has followed along. I appreciate all the support! ☺️
Here is 10,000 pieces of fruit to celebrate!🥳
Update: The prelude has gone a bit out of scope of being a simple demo. 7 areas to explore with several bonus areas, lots of characters, 16+ songs. Got some assets to finish and a short sprint with the dreaded... coding🖥️🤪
Can't make any dates yet, but stay tuned and stay safe.
🌳Trees are even more interactive now! You can shake em to see if they have any goodies. You can cut them down for resources, but don't worry they will grow back! They also politely curl out of the way when in the way of the camera. Cut physics are still a bit buggy😅
The Scrapped Woods. A small bit was in the demo, but it is really a vast network of mysterious maze like trails. Legends say you can find portals to new worlds here. What sort of secrets does this place hold...

Hello everyone. This will be my last
#screenshotsaturday
of the year, so I thought I would do a concept for a snow scene. I also want to thank everyone who has followed along with the project so far and hope you have a wonderful holiday. Lots of big things coming early next year!
Chatting with villagers is a big part of the game and I felt like interactions were stiff both visually and control wise. So I am working on making talking to NPCs more interesting and fluid.
I think the reason the cat did not want to talk was because he was very sad at how barren the land was. So I will smother him in flowers until he is happy 🌻🌼🐱🌷❤️

Update: There has been many delays, but the game is absolutely coming this spring!🌱
In the meantime, we will be releasing an updated teaser demo this Friday where you can explore a snow themed area.☃️
Been tying up some loose end systems like saving and loading, which is not very exciting to show... but here is a gif of the battle scene I forgot to include in last weeks devlog.
Hey everyone! The special Halloween demo will go live Oct 31 at 6PM EST. It is the last demo before the game comes out early next year so we hope you will enjoy it!
Just going to leave this here😉
👉
By the way, when you work on something for so long it is very hard to observe it from the outside, so any feedback/critiques/bug reports are greatly appreciated 👍
I am happy to say that at long last all the base requirements to make the game happen have been fulfilled! For more on what that means, you can read the July devlog here...
Now the fun really begins🥳
I recently discovered that Unity has built in functionality for fading objects out at a certain range. This is a lifesaver for lower end systems like mine and a time saver since I was going to try and code this myself... I am so grateful that a wonderful tool like Unity exists😊
The battle system features a mechanic that allows you to "stamp" your abilities with properties to alter it's effect. You can mix and match the stamps to stack up cool custom effects. 📨
Here a sleepy effect is added to apply a sleepy status effect to the enemy 😴
🎄🎁❄️
Just wanted to thank everyone who has been following along with the project. It has been a long haul, but expect some exciting news soon!
Hope everyone has a great holiday! ✨
Update on the game! Development is going good, but some things are taking a bit longer than expected as well as making some design changes. Not sure when the prelude game will be ready, but working hard to deliver a fun, quality, and bug free experience.🎮🌛
A year ago I only had 100 followers and felt like the project wasn't really going anywhere, but I stuck with it and 6000+ followers later I really feel like I can do this! Big thank you to everyone who has followed since the beginning and to all new followers! Here is some art😊
Well it isn't pretty, but the important thing is that most core components of the battle system are complete 👍so now I can get to making things look pretty Yipeee! 🥳
Hey everyone! We have an updated teaser demo! Explore a snowy world in search of missing gifts! Link will be in thread below!
Thank you everyone for the support this year and we will see you next year with even more news!
Just like the player, enemies can change their formation when they feel like it, though should probably limit it to once per turn or something like this might happen 😅
When it comes to platforming, what is your opinion on fall damage? Personally I like fall damage in my platformers, but with my game it is a tough call. There are power ups that go into effect when you are low health. Fall damage could be abused to get into that low health state.
A new devlog is up. Just clearing some things up about the art. If you have any questions about the visual elements, I will be happy to answer the best I can.
🗞️
Hey there! Hope everyone is having a nice start of spring/autumn wherever you are. Look forward to lots of exciting news and updates for the game this season!
🌻Happy Spring everyone!🌻
Things are a little scary out there right now, so please be safe and optimistic. I can't change the world, but if by doing this project can bring even the slightest amount of happiness to just a few people, then it makes it all the worth while doing.💚
Even with a lot of vegetation and particles on screen, the game performs fairly well with a lot of room for more optimization, like better atlases. Post processing and shadows looks good but make draw calls sky rocket. Is it even possible to optimize the post processing stack?😅
I felt like my paths and meadows were a bit sparse, so I have been working on a dynamic vegetation system that reacts to objects and the weather. It can also be cut down... with a broom?!
Project Update: Prelude is coming soon, tentatively late December, but no guarantees. Would like to start posting weekly screenshots again though. What sort of things would you like to see or would it be better to hoard until release?
👻1 week! A new demo is on the way! Featuring the long awaited battle system plus several other never before seen additions! Taking place in a scary forest, this short and sweet chapter will be an excellent compliment to any Halloween festivities🎃 See you then!
It's been a bit quiet around here this year, but development has been going full steam. Thanks to everyone for sticking around through the years. Lot's of big announcements coming next year. See you then! 🎇

Story: Have not shared any details yet, but it is gonna be quite a wild ride filled with many emotions and where your decisions can affect the outcome of the story.
You can play through the entire game in your pajamas if you want! She looks kinda cranky though. Maybe she thought there was more money in the grass or cause the designers didn't bother to cut her out properly... or color her in.

What is everyone up to for Halloween? Be sure to watch out for holes in the ground👻
Also we have some special Halloween artwork in the works. Be sure to keep an eye out for it later🎃
Sorry for the lack of updates lately... Been working on some under the hood stuff like fixing bugs, tightening up controls, and cleaning up code, which is not very fun to show. There is some exciting news coming soon though, so stay tuned😁
oh my 1k likes? Thanks so much! The video is a bit blurry so here is a still frame. Also the SFX are most definitely placeholders as they do get a bit annoying.
Hey everyone, after some playtesting we have decided that the quality of the demo is not up to par with what we wish to convey, so sadly we are cancelling the demo. Sorry to everyone who was looking forward to it. Hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween! 👻
New demo coming next friday, just in time for the festivities. 👻
Come take a stroll through the woods, battle creepy critters, and grow pumpkins! 🎃
