Scottish PEN expresses grave concern over the imprisonment of Craig Murray and calls for his release. The writer is the first person to be imprisoned in Scotland for media contempt for over 70 years. We fear this ruling will have a chilling effect on reporting and free expression
Scottish PEN is gravely alarmed by the arrest of
#MickNapier
at a peaceful pro-Palestinian demo last Saturday in Glasgow. Mick was charged under the Terrorism Act 2000. His bail conditions include being banned from all protests across Scotland. (1/3)

@pen_int
and a coalition of PEN centres around the world to condemn the decision of the High Court to clear the way for Julian

Scottish PEN is also deeply concerned that these events appear to follow a pattern of restrictions being placed on the ability to protest more generally. (3/3)

Scottish PEN unreservedly condemns the threatening tweet directed to
@jk_rowling
in response to her condemnation of the recent attack on Salman Rushdie. Threats of violence are never acceptable, and as readers and writers we are acutely aware today of the weight that words carry.
The abuse targeted at
@AngelaHaggerty
, Dr Jennifer Jones (who has deleted her account due to the abuse) & others undermines a robust environment within which ideas can be shared, falsehoods or abuse challenged & networks built. We need to be able to disagree and debate w/o abuse
Scottish PEN notes that The Stand comedy club in Edinburgh has reversed its decision to cancel the Joanna Cherry event that had been previously booked.
Blasphemy laws have no place in a modern and pluralist democracy. Backing the repeal of the Confession of Faith Ratification Act is an important step towards protecting free expression
