My favourite map I've produced in recent times is my map of 1972 DEAs.

I stood as an Alliance council candidate in 2019. I wasn’t elected, but I split the SDLP vote, inadvertently helping an independent republican, Raymond Barr, to win. One of the few good things to happen due to me being in Alliance.

What Doug Beattie is describing, is him being abused as a child. Grown uniformed men badly beating him, as a boy aged 16. The fact he’s still defended the Army for 43 yrs since is very sad.

"Because I was an Irishman I was beaten quite badly. ". Former Ulster Unionist leader Doug Beattie has said he was "beaten badly" by instructors for being Irish when he joined the Army. Read more on @BBCNewsNI. Listen on @BBCSounds.

One might wonder, as most unionist voters support voluntary coalition, why not in that case give up the unionist veto that forms half of the system of mandatory coalition? Then you’d be halfway there & SF mightn’t block it. Vetoes for those who want it, not for those who don’t.

This suggests:. —56% of Protestants support voluntary coalition.—54% who said “other/prefer not to say/no religion” support voluntary coalition.—34% of Catholics support voluntary coalition.

I got these results previously when I crunched religion stats for each party for the Winter 2024 poll. This suggests:

In LucidTalk’s Spring 2025 poll, 44% of voters backed SF and the DUP, who oppose voluntary coalition. At least 52% of voters backed pro-voluntary coalition parties (Alliance, UUP, SDLP, Greens etc).

The closest analogues to free association regionally would be the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. The US practices free association with some Pacific islands, but this is permanent and coercive.

If only 40% back parties that want NI integrally in the UK, that shouldn’t continue as the status quo. A similar number vote for pro-unity parties. Temporary free association between NI and Britain would be a more representative synthesis of opinion than the status quo.

There is no majority for pro-unity parties yet, but the unionist vote in NI is a minority and it’s been shrinking for decades. Some Alliance/unionist voters want to retain N. Ireland first and foremost. The link with Britain per se is a secondary factor (if even that) for some.

After 1921, the Irish Free State had a temporary status of free association with Britain. Then it became a fully independent republic. The transition to Irish unity may be similar to this.

Proscription of Palestine Action:. Supported by: DUP, UUP, TUV.Opposed by: SDLP.Didn’t vote: Alliance, Alex Easton. Sinn Féin don’t take their seats but they’d presumably oppose it.

As a young reporter in Northern Ireland I twice saw kids squirming on the ground in agony after being shot in the knees by the IRA. The memory still haunts me. Kneecap should be free to sing whatever they want - but why do they choose to celebrate such a vicious form of torture?.

This is my second full map of historic NI council wards. Once I clean up a few errors on this and label all 526 wards, it will be on my website. Next up: the 1924 local government map, which only saw small changes until 1972.
