California produces 99% of artichokes and walnuts, 97% of kiwis and plums, 95% of celery and garlic, and so on, from the Central Valley. Chinook salmon are endangered in the Central Valley, even though they are KEY to bringing essential nutrients to plants through the water.

Southern Chile supplies 1/3 of all farmed salmon. This success, however, has come at a cost to the environment. In 2016, a toxic ‘red tide’ – a huge algal bloom – engulfed hundreds of kilometers of Chile´s Southern coastline, resulting in mass die-offs of aquatic life. #salmon

Salmon are the only species that brings nutrients back up rivers. While maturing at sea, salmon acquire marine nutrients and when they die their decaying bodies release it. This supports the ecosystem and food web as a whole by creating a healthy environment for all other species

Washington relies on wildlife for economic prosperity with $1.1 billion coming from sport fishing, and $3.8 billion coming from commercial fishing. Without healthy salmon populations, Washington state would suffer a great deal economically. #biggerpicture #salmon

You guys answered the poll correctly! Roughy 33% of assessed fish populations are overfished, and over 50% are fully fished! These numbers are likely even higher as 30% percent of the global fish catch is unreported illegally, studies show (FAO, 2016). #salmon

Humans are the single largest threat to the salmon species as we degrade their habitats through development such as dams. This picture below shows activist graffiti art on the Elwah dam that was taken down in 2011 on behalf of the salmon. #savethesalmon #river

Wow! An impressive, promising new technique working towards helping salmon migrate past dams. It will be interesting to see where this technology goes!

Overfishing (catching fish faster than they can reproduce) is an urgent issue and is one of the biggest threats to ocean ecosystems. What % of assessed fish populations are overfished?! Take the poll!!

Watch the trailer for this astonishingly compelling documentary "DamNation." This advocacy film touches on the changing attitudes in the United States concerning the large system of dams in our country, and their effect on salmon.

We must think about the bigger picture, salmon provide countless ecosystem resources and are a food staple for many species such as orcas. Check out this very interesting article! #savethesalmon #salmon #endangeredspecies #restoration #orcas #biggerpicture #trophiccascade

When the dams on the Klamath River come out, it’s all going to change for the Spring Chinook salmon.

The western U.S. reared and released 12 million chinook salmon to support fisheries in California. In the Sacramento River alone, salmon fishing is valued at over $100 million annually, and yet they are endangered here. (Net Worth Economic Value of Fisheries Conservation, 2011)

In 2011, the largest dam removal in U.S. history was completed. The reason for this removal was to restore the habitat for the native salmon, so far the results have been successful and salmon have begun to thrive. https://t.co/nfKYusWLfq via @YouTube
