Major kudos to the brave men and women of the Hurricane Hunters. They risk their lives flying into these high end hurricanes, for meteorological research, analysis, forecasting, and ultimately saving lives. I love the weather more than anything. But not sure I stomach this. You?

Moderate tropical storm Chenge is expected to bring rains to northern Madagascar over the weekend. The system is not expected to make Madagascar landfall and is currently of no threat to Zimbabwe.

FAO is facilitating a consultative workshop on strengthening Agricultural Early Warning and Agricultural Information Systems in Zimbabwe. I suggested a systems thinking that incorporate structures, functions, tools, capacities, people and livelihoods.

The price of bananas in Honde Valley can be as low as US$1 for 100 bananas. Apart from a low price the majority of the produce is lost due to lack of market linkages, poor transport network and lack of support infrastructure to minimise other losses.

@SangoDos @baba_nyenyedzi As ever, it depends… but there are growing numbers, many successful. JV costs may be considerable, but other costs are definitely lower in Zimbabwe than in Zambia. Here’s a blog from a few years ago

The government should've established VBUs as local aggregation & processing facilities not production. This would in turn stimulated production of the idle land already in existence. The choice of product will be a factor of agronomic-ecological matching and historical successes

My wild imagination had been some aggregation and value addition hub. Most rural households in Zimbabwe have sizeable land (3ha on average). So production is not constrained mainly by access to land.

Community gardens have been around for over two decades - popularized by NGOs in the protracted relief era. They're demonstrations plots, seed systems and fallback schemes. Very few have succeeded as commercially viable enterprises due to scale and obvious social capital issues.

The plot is for the whole village. A village typically consists of 100 households but few were interested. Some had pulled out while others had never been interested. Those who remained were very excited about the development and believed that it would change their fortunes.

Ever since I started hearing about VBUs, I have been imagining what these could be. This week visited two in as many districts across the country. The typical set up is a 1ha plot with a solar powered borehole, fenced and some gardening/horticultural operations.
