Our new recycling strategy is out in @J_A_C_S! Comonomer additives enable deconstruction of polystyrene to small fragments, which can be repolymerized back to same/high MW. Thermomech properties preserved! @johnsonchem @EllieChemistry @Sipei5 @Peyton_Shieh

Eventually we landed on a good synthetic protocol. Hopefully we can publish a more detailed exploration of the nanoencapsulation process in subsequent work.

This simple dilution test allowed us to rapidly scan hundreds of nanoencapsulation protocols until we found one that passed. When we first passed the dilution test, we did not know which variable had helped the capsules, and they were just labeled "sam's magic capsules".

You can tell we have hit these targets by a very simple, low-tech experiment. Add nanocapsules at significant dilution to organic solvent- if they still upconvert, they're not leaking. If solution is clear, they're dispersed.

These nanocapsules have to be: Uniformly below 100 nm to avoid scattering light. Have a liquid droplet encapsulated to allow for molecular collisions and subsequent upconversion. Have a shell that permanently forms a barrier despite being ~10 nm thick. And disperse in resin.

Pretty excited to finally have this out on Arxiv:. My favorite figure is actually in the SI. We wanted to do 3D printing using upconverted blue light. But first we needed to design nanocarriers for upconversion liquid
