My first time in the USA and I must say it is capitalism in its most naked, violent form. I didn't expect to get a culture shock, but the commodification of everything is on a level I never truly thought possible. It is the socialisation of misery and the privatisation of wealth.

I mean this entirely seriously, it's because the Soviet Union fell. Western governments no longer felt the need to bribe their workers with as much surplus value from the peripheries as there was no alternative.
Is there some reason why the concept of a a non-neoliberal capitalism - one with more state ownership, more government control, more corporatism, maybe even a nod to trade unions, say, but still massively unequal and exploitative - is so hard to grasp?

A lot of people also seem to be missing the point. Capitalism doesn't mean that everywhere is going to be poor/ugly or whatever you want to call it. It means that poverty is part and parcel of that system. Capitalism isn't Manhattan or Binghamton, it is Manhattan AND Binghamton.
