Looks brilliant, shame I don't speak Portuguese! There is a fair bit of literature that shows how the Spaniards thought the Americas was a gift; an Eden for expelling Muslims and of course about the world-ecological transformation of the Americas.
One of the most important sociologists of Brazil wrote a whole book about this phenomenon: the portrayal of the Americas as edenic in the eyes of the first european colonists.

It's easy for me. I'm not english and I'm happy to eschew Britishness, making my welshness a cultural and political identity. But I appreciate it must feel odd to be told you shouldn't be proud to be English or British.

The question is, how do you create an identity that is in some way progressive. Englishness has a deeper problem. It was always an ethnic identity, with britishness capturing politics and other cultural identities. How do you recalibrate englishness to capture its diversity.

The problem with britishness is that it was built upon the empire and later on communitarian institutions like the NHS, coal board, steel board. These pillars have been eroded and nothing has replaced them. There is nothing inherently wrong with being proud to be British.

This is amazing. I'm learning to accept that I fundamentally just don't care about that much battles, diplomatic treaties etc. But if I can read about birth rates or why people started drinking coffee or whatever I'm transfixed

It would be interesting to do an Annales style analysis of the mentalités of Welsh Labour, which looks at shared ways of thinking, feeling, and perceiving the world. I doubt there has ever been a group which holds the people it is supposed to serve in such contempt.
