#Mumbai has significant groundwater reserves that have been used for decades, mainly for non-potable purposes. Yet, it faces acute shortages. The real issue is not scarcity, but inequity and inefficiency in water distribution, writes Sachin Tiwale.

Despite 3.8B litres/day from dams, many in Mumbai rely on tankers tapping groundwater—a source neglected for decades. In my piece for @scroll_in, I explain why we don’t need new dams—we need better governance. 🔗 #Mumbai #WaterCrisis.

Does Mumbai need another dam? No—we already have enough water. I recently spoke with @gokarn_shruti from @citizenmatters about Mumbai’s piped water supply challenges. Need to prioritise efficient, equitable, and sustainable use of the water we already have.

Mumbai's water shortage isn't supply-related but due to leaks and theft. ATREE Fellow.@SachinTiwale highlights that improving the water distribution network spread across the city is essential to ensure the delivery of adequate and equitable water for all. For more information

🚰 It’s time to move beyond centralised piped water supply and recognise, support, and mainstream alternative water systems that are already making a difference on the ground.

We need to go beyond the centralised piped water supply (CPWS) model and recognise the valuable contribution of alternative systems, which cannot be ignored or replaced.

Mumbai doesn’t need more dams—we need better water management. The city has enough surface and groundwater. Dams won’t fix the real issues: low pressure, poor quality, inadequate supply, and erratic timings.

On the surface, Mumbai has enough water. Its reservoirs brim with monsoon rain, its infrastructure spans decades of development. And yet, in daily life, water remains an elusive privilege — scarce not because of nature, but because of neglect, design, and politics.
