My cousin said I should get a
@Linktree_
to put all my stuff together. At first, I said no because it’s another thing to do, but I actually like it! It was easy to set up, and I quickly attached it to all my socials. So, here’s a link to stuff I do!
What’s really interesting is that in my current research, church was a key site of literacy development (a site that, according to many I interviewed, people don’t really attend anymore)
I got my summary statement for my book this week. As of right now, Recovering Black Storytelling in Qualitative Research: Endarkened Storywork has sold about 2300 books.
I. Am. FLABBERGASTED!
I remember all the rejections. I remember the sadness, the feelings of dejection.
One more thing: If I bought this graduation robe and can’t walk because graduation is canceled, I’m live streaming me walking around my block in my graduation robe.
If we’re on lockdown, I’m walking around my house and live-streaming on FB
Someone’s going to see this!! 😂😂
My book came out 11/2021. Bc it was a “academic” book, I hoped it would sell ~ 500 copies in its lifetime (I’d read 500 for an academic book means you did well). Just found out that it’s sold 1600 in 8 months! I’m overjoyed, y’all. I know my grandparents are smiling down on me 😭
Next time anyone asks me about the relevance of research centering Black women and girls, I’m just going to show them this picture or put it in my revision comments 🤷🏾♀️
Oooh.. one I can participate in

1. 1st semester (2016) in a class on critical discourse analysis, I was cautioned by a white male student to not make things about race... in a critical class... when I was talking about how Black men were shown on the news
I’m sooooo happy to say (now that I’ve signed the contract) that my dissertation will now be a book! Black Girl Research and Afrofuturism: The Womanist Imagination is now under contract with Routledge under

I’m super duper excited to announce that, starting Fall 2023, I’ll be an Assistant Professor of Curriculum & Instruction (focus secondary ELA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign!!! 😆😆

my name is Doctor, P to the H D!!!!!
I’m soooooo happy and overwhelmed right now that I don’t know what to do, but I’m thankful that so much of my village showed up for me. I wouldn’t be here without y’all.
We are proud to announce the recipient of the 2021 NCTE Promising Researcher Award,
@SR_Toliver

A Valentine from First Lady Jill Biden popped up overnight at the White House. Per her office, “The First Lady is known for her sense of humor, love of surprises and celebrating traditions... This is her Valentine to the country.”
It took me foooreeeevver to update this, but it’s done! Almost 100 books added 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Keep in mind that I don’t have a team behind this, so I know I’ve missed hella books, but I’m always looking to update!

2. 1st semester (2016), I sent my first article to a journal. It was rejected (it wasn’t that good), but 2 of the reviewers asked why I was only talking about Black girls, and why I didn’t add while girls as a comparison group. I was writing about Afrofuturism

I’m just a professor… standing in front of my bank account…asking the universe why reimbursement & payment takes so long 😩
Seriously, I’m waiting on like $5500 in reimbursements, and I’m also waiting on a $1000 payment for a talk from March.
I’m broke, and I shouldn’t be 😞
Sooooooo..... I’ve been selected to receive the AERA Arts-Based Educational Research (

Big shout out to my committee, (Jennifer Graff,

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Literacy Studies & Secondary Humanities at the University of Colorado, Boulder (

)! I’m so excited for Fall 2020!!
It’s rainy outside, we’re social distancing, my eyebrows have been neglected, and I haven’t been on campus since January, buuuuuuut
TODAY IS MY GRADUATION DAY!
This has been such an incredible journey, and I’m thankful to everyone who has helped me along the way 😫😫
Today, I am thrilled to announce that an edited book proposal I submitted with a beloved mentor friend was rejected! The critiques were def. valid, and we’ll see what we do with the idea next. Sharing because I think it’s important to share all the things!
9. On the job market last year (2019), I was told that I’ll definitely get a job because I’m Black and woman. That I could just show up and be hired. They lamented that it would be hard for them because they are white and male (not bc they didn’t have the range).

Whether Rih Rih is pregnant or just rocking an awesome postpartum body, I’m here for it. As difficult as it is to walk around in either body, she is giving us a SHOW. I so appreciate this set, and the dancers??? Yes!

I know it’s small and that it doesn’t mean much, but this means a lot to me, especially considering that I was told my research might be a fad and that I should consider changing it to something more worthwhile. I’m so happy 😭😭😭
Another pub dropped! It technically came out 2 weeks ago, but I had a baby and wasn’t checking email, sooo 🤷🏾♀️

3. 1st semester, I went to my first conference. Once there, I found out that several students roomed together and that there was a former and current student outing at a restaurant. I wasn’t invited. I didn’t see any Black students in the many pictures posted

Last fall, I taught a critical content analysis course w/ the goal of helping doc students employ the method via writing a journal article. I hoped they’d submit them, too. So far, 1 journal accept w/ minor revisions & one RR. I am ecstatic!! This is why I love teaching 😭😭
7. Last year, I was asked if I’m ever going to go beyond Black girls cause my work seems really focused on one group. They thought my work could be so impactful for white students who also need my voice
#BlackintheIvory
4. Sitting at an awards ceremony, a prof at my uni told me he didn’t know what I did, but he heard I did good things with texts. He then told me he had a friend who said nigger when he wrote about Huckleberry Finn. That prof. said the actual word about 9 times
#BlackintheIvory
I sent my paperwork in, and they said I could add it to my email signature now, so I figured I could tell my friends. I’ve been holding this secret in for like 2 weeks!! So... I’m overjoyed to be a recipient of a 2019 NAEd/Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowship!!!!!
8. My mantra throughout my program was that if I wrote a course/conference paper, I was going to submit it to a journal. From this, I had quite a few pubs. I was told to stop publishing and applying for grants because no one would hire me.
#BlackintheIvory
I’m just going to get ahead of the

papers and op-eds about the

. Let me present some paper titles:
The Slap Heard Round the World: A Treatise on Black Masculinity, Fame, and Capitalism
Black Slap, White Show: Consequences of Violence in Public Spaces
5. Once I had my research focus (representations of and responses to Blck ppl in text), I was asked by a prof if I really wanted to join the fad of Black girl research. They saw my work as more than Black girl Literacies and didn’t want me caught up in the moment
#BlackintheIvory
I’m on a writing retreat to hole myself up in a hotel room so I can write away from real-life 😂. And you know what? It’s working!!!! I finished a column, revised one paper, & started a new one (and that’s at 4500 words). It’s only been 1.5 days, & I leave on Wed.

Today is my birthday!
The best present would be a review of my book on Amazon or Goodreads (if you’ve read it, of course lol). The next best present would be to buy my book (if you haven’t already)!
6. Last year, another scholar and I were asked to be THE diversity on a panel that had a lot of white scholars on it. I don’t mind doing panels, but it’s never a good look to be the diversity representative

8.5. Mind you, another white female grad student who came before me published just as much, and everyone sang her praises to the point where I was trying to emulate her cv

So excited to say that my article, Can I Get a Witness: Speculative Fiction as Testimony and Counterstory, is now published! So thankful for the reviewers and editors of
@JLiteracyRes
for letting me share this work. So, here’s the article in 10 tweets!
✨ JLR's Most Cited ✨ In one of JLR's most cited articles, Dr. S.R. Toliver argues that situating speculative fiction as counterstory creates space for Black girls to challenge dominant narratives and create new realities. Read this article here:
Here's the thing. It wasn't the inherent racism that bothered me. It was the fact that a few people were so triggered by Black women reading speculative fiction, specifically sci-fi. They took time out of their day to provide these responses.

Hi Everyone!
I'm doing a survey study about people who identify as Black women and read science fiction (broadly construed). If you could help me out by taking the survey, I would greatly appreciate it! The link is included below.

In the past few years I’ve noticed doc students using social media to let folx know they’re on the market. I’m seeing flyers, photo shoots, vlogs, etc. It’s already stressful enough dissertating and applying for jobs. Now they gotta be media marketing geniuses, too???
Soo… my book comes out in 2 months, and I’m so super excited about it! I’m working on getting a discount code b4 I share the title & such, but to prepare, I decided to share the cover art (done by Rufus Royster) & some of the endorsements!

has been amazing ❤️
We’re always taught to find the absence, to find some omission/deficiency… but I ❤️ finding what’s there, thinking about whose shoulders I stand on even if I can’t see them. Who am I building with? Who am I vibing with? Where do I see resonance? That’s most important to me.
I see a lot of PhD students trying to find a dissertation topic by trying to first find a gap in the literature. I get why you're doing this, but my best academic writing advice for you is to write about something you deeply deeply care about.
I’m writing my dissertation as a scifi novel. Essentially, I’m refashioning my research into a story, tying my interest in academia and speculative fiction together 💚💚
#Blackspecficmonth
is for Black SFF writers across the board. We're here to celebrate you!
Tell us about either your current WIP or the thing you've published in the past that you're most proud of.
Black excellence to the front please!
Octavia tried to tell us company towns would take over… you can’t leave the company (or school district) even if you wanted to because… where would you go? Especially when you can’t afford to live (or work) anywhere else?
A new one-bedroom apartment for under $1,400 in the San Francisco Bay Area? With a gym, bike room and play area for kids?
The Jefferson Union High School District opened 122 units for teachers and staff to help with housing. Others could be next.
Sooooo this is kinda cool! It’s a website that turns your Google Scholar info into a word cloud. I think the server was overwhelmed when I first checked, but I waiting. I’m glad I did because it was so affirming to see!
I tried using AI to write an abstract of my paper. I did this bc the abstract is the thing I hate most about writing papers. The 2 apps I used wrote amazingly terrible abstracts, & it saddened me 😞, but it also motivated me to write it. I wrote it in 10 minutes lol
Today, I deleted my work email from my phone. I can still go online to check it if I want to, but it will no longer be something I just check at all times of day. It is scary and also freeing 🙌🏾
Idk if I'll have a dissertation defense in person or virtually, but what I do know is that I just sent my dissertation to my committee. What am I supposed to do with myself now? lol
(I have other things to do, buuuuut not today lol)
I was so caught up with
#NCTE21
that I forgot today is my boo birthday!!! Happy birthday to this amazing labor of love. In the midst of this verdict and the overall sadness of the time, I’m glad to have some joyous things happening, too.
To be clear, I can & will go up for tenure at some point, but the whole “kill yourself to earn it” vibe ain’t for me. I ❤️ what I do, & I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished, but academia is a job, not my life. Our worlds are so much bigger than a hustle for more service 😅
I was 28 when I started grad school
31 when I defended my dissertation
32 when I started on the TT at CU Boulder
33 when I published my first book
35 when I started at UIUC (still on the TT)
Tenure? 🤷🏾♀️ I’m not rushing. I get the push for it, but I’m just not pressed
I don’t want to see any tweets saying “this is not my America” or “this isn’t the America I know” or “why won’t they do anything”
- This is (& has been) our America.
- Some of us have BEEN trying to tell you about the America we know
- whiteness is why they won’t do anything
I need a writing group where we read and review each other’s papers before we send them out. Bonus points for writing together. Maybe if I tweet it vs thinking about it, something will happen lol
I’ve had several Zoom calls in the past two weeks, and each time, my son and/or my dog has joined me at some point. I didn’t apologize. I won’t apologize for my babies wanting hugs and attention 🤷🏾♀️ I hate that we’ve felt the need to apologize for being human
Update… 2 accepts 😊 (1 solo; 1 co-authored by 3 students)
FYI: Course had 12 students. 3 didn’t submit, still waiting to hear about 2 co-authored papers (2 students each), and 1 resubmitted article (solo).
Still 4/9 students who submitted being published ain’t bad!
Last fall, I taught a critical content analysis course w/ the goal of helping doc students employ the method via writing a journal article. I hoped they’d submit them, too. So far, 1 journal accept w/ minor revisions & one RR. I am ecstatic!! This is why I love teaching 😭😭
Today marks my 3-year anniversary of becoming a DOCTA! So much has happened since that quarantine defense in March 2020.
1. I had no graduation (😞), so I still struggle putting on those robes
2. I published an award-winning book!
3. I moved across the country from Georgia to CO
I remember being told it wasn’t academic enough, so it wouldn’t do well in the academic market. I actually stopped believing in it for a bit, but

Update!
I sent proposals to 4 presses, 2 that focus on the humanities & 2 that focus on education. I submitted based on my bookshelf (where do the people I cite/read most publish?)
2 have gotten back to me. 1 is sending out for peer review & the other I’ll have a convo with!

My mom is going to a Que party… she’s 60… she’s never been to one. I know there’s some changes that happen post undergrad/grad school, but I also know some things don’t change. I cannot wait to hear her recount this experience 😂😂😂
