Some very interesting updates in relation to nature of and eligibility for acute treatments and recommendations around intensity and nature of rehabilitation . Plain summary guidelines also now available here.

A huge thank you to the acute stroke team @RoyalLondonHosp for an amazing first placement!.I've learnt so much about how support stroke patients and those around them, with transferable skills for future placements. (Also grateful for the amazing London view from the ward!)

One opportunity I was lucky enough to take advantage of was joining the team for a London Air Ambulance Charity talk to learn about the amazing job they do supporting patients both in an emergency and the wellbeing support they provide afterwards🚁Complete with helipad tour!

💡My top tips for future students are to make the most of every opportunity available! Continue to learn and be knowledgeable about what you are doing and why. It’s also a great placement to learn about the MDT and how they provide holistic and meaningful care to patients.

I've learned about online working and being able to adapt therapy depending on the patient's presentation - this is very important in such a fast paced environment and variety of patients! My confidence in working independently has increased as well as collaborative MDT working.

One important skill I've got to practice is producing session plans and creating short term and long term goals, including ST goals which are important for the patient’s safety and wellbeing on the ward and meaningful LT goals following their discharge➡️.

I was also lucky enough to attend the VF clinic! I found it so interesting to actually see how the swallow works and watching how it can be made safer with diet modification and strategies.

I have observed and carried out oral trials of different food and fluid consistencies, which can increase safety when eating and drinking for dysphagia patients. We also practiced thickening fluids from Level 1-4 and trying them ourselves!

👥Rehab support workers do an amazing job of carrying out session plans set by SLTs, OTs and Physio to allow more face to face therapy time for patients.

🚶Physiotherapy support patients back to their baseline mobility and are important for positioning patients for safe eating positions. 🍽️Dieticians ensure patients are getting enough nutrition and hydration whilst following any eating and drinking guidelines.

🩺The medical team inform us if the patient is medically stable for therapy input. 💭OT support with cognition and how this may affect communication. We also work together to link functional skills and communication.

@AliceHowellsSLT @CityLCS I have never worked in an acute setting, so this was a huge challenge! It was really interesting to learn more about how a hospital ward works and work alongside the MDT. I’ve really enjoyed the collaborative working and learning how different professions support each other….
