Over 80% of children with sickle cell disease are insured by Medicaid in their first three years of life, and highlights opportunities for Medicaid to improve early pediatric sickle cell disease care.

In Michigan and New York State, youths with sickle cell anemia received enough medication to cover only a third of the year at the most. Increasing use of hydroxyurea is essential and urgent in this population. @UMchear @UM_IHPI.
Hydroxyurea prescribing in youths with sickle cell anemia insured by Medicaid modestly after the @nih_nhlbi guidelines recommended hydroxurea in 2014. Increasing hydroxyurea use may require a multifaceted approach.
