This has been reshared a lot recently. Many #schoollibrarians are sharing stats which show that reading in their schools is not in decline-quite the reverse. The evidence is clear: having a librarian in school can build and embed a reading culture. Follow us to find out more.

As @frankcottrell_b says in the article, the solution is in our hands. Stop closing libraries. Retain school librarians and employ many more. Fund author visits to schools. Publishers, stop throwing cash at celebrities and focus instead on engaging young readers. We can fix this.

You can’t have reading for pleasure without easy access to books. All primary schools need a school library and librarian
800 libraries have been closed due to spending cuts since 2010 — a fifth of the UK's total. And many of those that remain have seen their opening hours cuts.

A #school #librarian can make a huge difference. They will invest in comic books and manga and novels not found on supermarket shelves. They will bring in authors and generate enthusiasm around #readingforpleasure. They will make the #library the most popular place in the school
