My Step 2 score came in today and I'm happy and proud of myself. From coping with my mother's cancer and the death of family members, only my family knows truly how dark the first 3 years of med school were for me, but here I am standing and doin' the damn thing.

My breast surgery rotation has me (a single lady) reflecting on the importance of having a good life partner. In clinic this week I saw partners who were engaged and supportive as their wives were facing/faced breast cancer surgery and chemo.

Officially passed 7/7 shelf exams on the first try. I keep thinking about MS1 me, who was encouraged by faculty & mentors to consider taking a year off bc of concerns I would struggle given my mom's new cancer diagnosis. I did struggle, but always pushed through. Proud of myself.

It made me think of my dad and the way he goes above and beyond to care for my mom as she battles ovarian cancer. He drives her to all her chemo apts, never leaves her side, helps with her care at home. Who you have by your side on this journey of life is so important.

STEP 2 DONE ✅ I could cry of happiness. Between taking 7 shelf exams, step 1 and step 2 in the last 13 months I have never studied so hard in my life! It feels so good to reach the finish line of this marathon.

At the beginning of my Step 2 day the lady checking me in noted how we live in same neighborhood. When she checked me out she said “I want to wish you an extra special good luck and good job because I’m so proud to see a Latina from my community becoming a doctor.” What a day 🥹

My family used LA county hospitals when they first immigrated to the US. As a USC student I had professors who were LAC+USC physicians, they inspired me each day. Now as a UCLA MS3 I have the privilege to rotate at UCLA’s county hospital for surgery. Out here livin the dream

My attending told me yesterday that I have a “poised confidence” that doesn’t come off as arrogant that I should never let go of even when this med journey tries to rattle me. He also said it’s very obvious that my county patients make me happy and fulfilled. Es verdad.

Okay, sharing my top resources/tips because I've gotten DMs asking for Step 1 advice! Disclaimer at UCLA we take Step 1 after clerkship year so I have a whole year of clinical experience + shelf exam studying going into this. My dedicated period was a little under 5 weeks.

My dad is Puerto Rican and used to be a phone technician that would go into super wealthy homes in LA. He says customers used to tell him this ALL to which he would respond "Thanks! Your English is good too." He says the look on people's face afterward was priceless 😂

On 2/20/19 I got my second mcat score back with big improvement. 2/20/20 I got my full ride offer from ucla (one of dream schools) and that SAME day I got accepted to my other dream school 🤯2/22/23 I found out I passed step 1. My lucky week has stood the test of time 🍀

When my mom was diagnosed w/ ovarian cancer I signed her up for a program that paired her with an ovarian cancer survivor mentor. Today her mentor visited for 2nd time & brought her partner (who’s a doc!) & we had the best home cooked meal all together. Nothing but happy vibes 🥰

I may be my ancestors' wildest dreams, but I am also quite simply my parents' wildest dreams. Had that realization while I drove by the wienerschnitzel my dad used to work at on my way home from an invigorating clinic shift. I am so grateful. Life is wild.

Today marks the 2 year anniversary of when my when my mom had surgery for her ovarian cancer. Today also happens to be my first official day of OBGYN clerkship, a specialty I’m interested in because of my mom’s cancer journey. Today was a special day 🥺

This notion of it being easier for us makes my blood boil. As a MS1 I was walking around LA minding my business w/ a “UCLA medicine” sweater when some random old white man stopped to ask if I got into med school more easily because I’m a “minority.” The AUDACITY
During my first week of med school, a white male told me “it must’ve been so much easier for you to get in as the diversity.” No, baby. It’s because you have the personality of one ply toilet paper, among a host of red flags on your application.

On my neuro rotation the fellow I worked w/ went out of his way to connect me to a latina obgyn resident when I told him I was interested in the specialty. A year later, now I'm doing research with that resident. Appreciate all the people in my life that have my back 💙

Summer before I started med school I got into a huge argument with one of my parents because I was concerned about their drastic weight loss. I forced them to hospital and they ended up with an advanced cancer diagnosis. Sometimes the heaviness of that hits me randomly.

Thankful for all the med school friends who checked on me while we spent the week learning about cancer. The calls and texts have meant a lot. Today one classmate even spoke up for me without singling me out when our tutor brought up lack of participation during PBL.
