The Coastal Wizards are at it again, eh? Should BATTLEBORN ever stray from sword-and-sorcery, heroic fantasy and adventure fiction in favor of Carebear coloured Romantasy, may our editorial staff be crucified to the Tree of Woe. Blood-and-thunder BELONG in fantasy.

Most people complaining about Salvatore probably have not read all of his work. Hell, I've got through a good amount of it but haven't read everything. I have no issue with Breezy yet. This could be fine. I trust his writing to carry it if nothing else. One of the massive
"My name is not Drizzt’s daughter…" Meet Breezy Do’Urden, a fierce, ambitious, and unforgettable new heroine forging her own legacy in The Finest Edge of Twilight, a new series by R.A. Salvatore. Available now.

I admit that audiobook sample was... not great. Which is shocking as the marketing for this has until now been pretty inventive. One I hope to steal is they gave free copies to anyone who knew the proper code word. It's still on my to read pile - I'll judge only when I have.

I get the caution, I do - but has RA Salvatore not earned our trust? 39 books, 40 million sales, one of the best heroes in modern fantasy, and the Legend of Drizzt is often considered a classic of the genre. The first 10 especially. The man has earned the right to do a spinoff.

He seemed genuinely excited to explore the character and the relationship between her and Drizzt, so no, there is no sinister plan to ditch Drizzt in favor of some Girlboss replacement, its a dad who wants to write about a character inspired by one of his kids.

Worst thing I can say about Bob Salvatore is he's a Pats fan, otherwise, a perfect gentleman. I'd just found out my wife was expecting, and the rest of the table took turns offering me fatherly advice, Salvatore included. He loves his kids - his daughter inspired Breezy.

It was at Gencon 2022, where Salvatore was the Writer's Symposium Guest of Honor. By luck, I was at a table with him, Howard Andrew Jones, Michael Stackpole, Steve Diamond, and Bryan Young. Food bad, company AMAZING, an all-time convention moment.

Fine. I'll weigh in on the great fantasy controversy of the moment. Full confession - I have not read THE FINEST EDGE OF TWILIGHT yet, it could well be awful. But I was at a dinner where RA Salvatore talked about it early in conception, and am in a position to dash some rumors.

This is the same reason we have just over a dozen living MOH recipients from the entire GWOT, and damn near nobody unde the rank of Sergeant gets a Purple Heart or Silver Star. Meanwhile we have non-combat officers with more ribbons than Audie Murphy himself.

The better question is why did they ever stop? The downfall of comics, pulp mags and paperbacks began when you couldn't get them at gas stations groceries and corner shops, only specialty retailers. We need to return to the old model of them being everywhere for them to survive.

The moment they brought back Sutekh the Destroyer, Classic Who's greatest one-off villain, the move everyone agreed for years was Nu Who's "In Case of Impending Cancelation Break Glass" action, was paramount to admitting the show was in death's door.
Former Doctor Who writer Robert Shearman has stated that the beleagured British sci-fi series is now "probably as dead as we've ever seen it." https://t.co/QCeNL7uqmi

Disney gave it a shot in the arm in the 2010s in an attempt to create a franchise that appealed to boys. See also John Carter, Lone Ranger. When those failed, they bought boy brands Star Wars and Marvel... which they cratered by trying to make them into girl brands.

Simo Häyhä died at the ripe old age of 96 in 2002. Til his dying day, he was proud of his service. When asked what he felt shooting 700 commies dead? "Recoil." A free, independent Finland survived him - the Soviet Union did not, dying a decade before Simo in 1991.

Yeah, that's about how I'd expect a debate between a US Marine and a CIA agent to go down.

It really doesn't help 99 percent of craft beer was the same crap: an overpriced super hoppy IPA with a spritz of fruit/veggie flavor, made & served by a trustifarian hipster who makes life hell for the locals. I raise a glass to the end of gourd ale and hipsters.

Incredibly bleak how universities have embraced our illiterate future. Bookstores with no books, libraries getting rid of physical collections, classes that no longer teach novels because students find them too long. Schools must resist the bookless world tech seeks to create.
On the topic of undergaduates (not) reading, the University of Michigan 'bookstore' has only a single shelf of books.

Maybe if more people saw that terrible script, someone could have pointed out the obvious. "Hey, you know what's a terrible idea? Brutally killing off the title character of a 60-plus year franchise." They killed James Bond, the franchise died with the him.
No Time to Die is the first James Bond film in history where 007 dies at the end. Daniel Craig explained that he only agreed to return for one last movie if his character had a “real ending.” He wanted to close the cycle that began with Casino Royale. Bond’s death was kept secret

Tolkien, the same man who went on a rampage when the Catholic Church stopped Latin Mass, wouldn't have just HATED Rings of Power. His fire and fury would make Mount Doom look like a sparkler, as slavishly devoted as he was to the canon of Middle Earth, ROP would be desecration.
