Lincoln Riley just turned 40.
Maybe the milestone birthday is making him sentimental. Maybe it was losing two mentors that put everything into perspective. But USC’s coach has thought a lot lately about time and what his future might hold.
My latest:
Lincoln Riley said USC doesn’t “come in every week talking about winning a national championship ... I don’t know where that narrative starts.”
In July ’22,
@BillPlaschke
asked him about expectations:
Riley: “To win the championship. … We didn’t come here to play for second.”
USC has an automated external defibrillator (AED) hanging in the hallway right off the main Galen Center court. It’s now saved the lives of two men’s basketball players in just over a year.
USC's 2024 football schedule is looking like a murderer's row. Open the season with LSU in Las Vegas. End the season at home against Notre Dame. In between, nine Big Ten games.
As part of his ticket allotment for the Heisman Trophy ceremony tomorrow night, Caleb Williams is bringing eight of his USC offensive linemen with him to New York, courtesy of Ac+ion Water.
Pretty cool gesture from USC’s QB.
Hot Pocket heiress Michelle Janavs, who paid to fix her daughters’ entrance exams and sneak one into USC as a beach volleyball player, has been sentenced to 5 months in prison (
@MatthewOrmseth
):
Caleb Williams to his fellow finalists: “I may be standing up here today, but y’all get to go to the College Football Playoff. Guess you can’t win them all.”
Caleb Williams surprised members of the women’s basketball team today after their practice with Beats headphones as a good luck gift ahead of the Pac-12 tourney.
Impressive move by USC's new QB, who has an NIL deal with Beats.
Multiple sources tell
@latimes
that no other Pac-12 members are expected to be added to the Big Ten at this time.
Oregon, Washington, Stanford, etc. will not be following USC and UCLA.
BREAKING: A donor-run NIL collective is coming to USC football.
"Student Body Right" is planning to provide "the equivalent of a base salary" to every Trojan football player ... and it's planning to do so against the school's wishes
I thought this Jared Goff quote was as raw and honest as Goff has been all season: "We got completely outplayed. … We left so much out there on the field. That’s so hard to take right now. I’m mad at myself. I wish I would’ve done things differently."
With the discourse about Caleb Williams kicking up again, it’s clearly necessary I reiterate that he has never asked for ownership stake in his future NFL team, and I have no idea why people would believe that actually happened.
USC now ranks …
… 124th in scoring defense (34.5/game)
… 122nd in total defense (436 yards/game)
… 120th in rush defense (186.5 yards/game)
… 107th in pass defense (249.5 yards/game)
… 128th in plays of 10+ yards allowed (150)
… 132nd in plays of 10+ yards (62)
Corey Liuget said the Chargers smelled smoke but weren’t affected by the air quality. Liuget: "It cancelled out the weed smell that we usually get here."
Aside from how obviously ridiculous that notion is, West’s outward rage about his portrayal probably only serves to make the public believe Winning Time's portrayal even more! (whether it’s fair/accurate or not)
A wild — and telling — stat through four weeks: USC is the last team in the nation that’s yet to commit a turnover.
The Trojans are also No. 1 in interceptions (11) and tied for the lead in total takeaways (14).
Caleb Williams is the Pac-12’s Offensive Player of the Year.
Tuli Tuipulotu is the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Year.
But somehow, Lincoln Riley is not either of the co-Pac-12 Coaches of the Year.
Lincoln Riley made clear yesterday that rebuilding the defensive front was a major focus. USC has now added Anthony Lucas, Jack Sullivan, Mason Cobb and Jamil Muhammad from the transfer portal, plus six freshmen DL/LB in the 2023 recruiting class
No doubt from USC QB Caleb Williams about his status for the Cotton Bowl.
After speaking to kids at a Caleb Cares graduation ceremony, Williams (hamstring) told
@latimes
that he’ll play in USC’s bowl game.
USC is bringing back its Trojan Walk tradition ahead of Saturday's opener. The team will arrive in front of the Coliseum and walk through the Peristyle to the field, just like it used to.
(Fans will need to be there two hours and 45 min ahead of kickoff … 12:15 pm this week)
BREAKING: USC has fired three senior officials in its athletic department: COO/CFO Steve Lopes, Trojan Athletic Fund senior associate athletic director Ron Orr, and associate athletic director Scott Jacobson.
Colbert had Florida’s spring game yesterday. Drove two hours to fly out of Orlando, flew a red eye to L.A. and was running on no sleep, just to get to London’s Pro Day today. Very cool of him.
USC has three first-team AP All-Americans this season, the most of any school.
Quarterback Caleb Williams, guard Andrew Vorhees and defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu were all on the first team.
Unemployment benefits, a suspended receiver, and a campus visit from federal agents.
How USC's Munir McClain found himself at the center of a federal criminal investigation:
Absolutely bizarre end to the half with USC-Arizona, as the clock continues to run despite the ref not spotting the ball yet. USC should’ve had five seconds to spike the ball, but time had already run out.
Pac-12 refs, man. Pac-12 refs.
Reggie Bush has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame with the 2023 class. A deserving honor that indicates where sentiment over what happened w/Bush is heading.
After UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson made his feelings for USC known this week, Caleb Williams was asked last night what he’s learned about USC-UCLA ahead of his first rivalry meeting.
Williams: “Haven’t learned much to be honest with you. Just treating it like another game.”
BREAKING: Former USC football player Abdul-Malik McClain was arrested Monday on federal charges of allegedly orchestrating a group of CFB players in a scheme to claim fraudulent COVID-related unemployment benefits.
BREAKING: A new NIL collective has emerged to support USC.
The Tommy Group is led by six alums/fans/former athletes with USC ties — Keyshawn Johnson, John Terzian, Dave Stromberg, Alex Holmes, Avi Chesed and Michael Hahn.
TTG says it has already worked w/ 80 athletes on deals
BREAKING: USC and UCLA are in negotiations to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten.
Early story on this stunning news from me,
@BradyMcCollough
and
@BillPlaschke
:
Wade Phillips opens his press conference by naming every Bears offensive starter, just like Sean McVay did yesterday. Perfect deadpan. Wade Phillips is a national treasure.
This quote from USC RB Darwin Barlow last night really said it all about the difference with Lincoln Riley’s offense:
"Me and my homeboys were joking in the running back room the other day, if you didn’t know the play, you could just run a swing last year. Now, you gotta know."
A dozen billboards demanding the return of Reggie Bush’s Heisman have sprouted up across L.A. today.
The campaign is courtesy of longtime donor Brian Kennedy, who told
@latimes
that Bush had no idea the billboards were going up.
Tuli Tuipulotu, the Pac-12 defensive player of the year, hasn’t made a decision yet on whether to declare for the NFL, but the USC DL will play in the Cotton Bowl.
BREAKING: USC running back Kenan Christon’s university suspension for a Sept. physical altercation has been reduced on appeal,
@latimes
has learned.
He’ll be eligible to return to campus and university activities on May 12. He hopes to return to USC's football program.
Some personal (and very exciting) news:
After almost seven years covering UCLA/Rams/Chargers/NFL for
@ocregister
, I’m joining the
@latimes
to be the
@USC_Athletics
beat writer.
I could not possibly be more pumped about joining the
@latimessports
team.
A nightmarish loss, one of the worst at USC in recent memory, is complete.
USC is obliterated, 42-28, by Stanford. Let the speculation about Clay Helton begin.
Just a few minutes left in Evan Mobley’s brief USC career. A shame he never got to play in front of fans at Galen Center. But will go down as one of the best ever to play at USC.
Needless to say, every single sports program in America — high school, college, etc. — should have an AED in close proximity. It can make all the difference.

@wilnerhotline
Sources tell
@latimes
that USC was the impetus behind this move to the Big Ten.
The move is believed to include all sports except for beach volleyball, sources say.
USC has made its move to the Big Ten official.
Mike Bohn: "Ultimately, the Big Ten is the best home for USC and Trojan athletics as we move into the new world of collegiate sports."
Can confirm that Jaxson Dart has entered the NCAA transfer portal.
With Dart exiting USC, all signs are pointing towards top transfer QB Caleb Williams joining his former coach at USC.
I asked USC AD Mike Bohn if the Texas/OU move to the SEC was an initial impetus for today’s move.
Bohn: "I don’t believe there’s a college administrator in the country that didn’t recognize clearly there were two conferences that were separating themselves from everyone else."
Before the season, Lincoln Riley pulled the USC beat aside to tell us about how much he respects the work we do as journalists.
A very different message is now being sent to all of us
Sources confirm to
@latimes
that USC and UCLA are negotiating to join the Big Ten in a stunning and landscape-altering move for college sports.
@wilnerhotline
was first on the huge news.
When USC and UCLA meet for the 92nd time on Saturday, it will be the first time both schools start Black quarterbacks in the crosstown rivalry.
@BillPlaschke
on the significance of that milestone and the path other Black QBs walked before them:
Clay Helton today called USC “an extremely disciplined bunch, especially in critical situations.”
USC had 11 penalties on Saturday and have lost more yards to penalties than any other Pac-12 team this season.
Lincoln Riley said he was more proud of this narrow USC victory than any of the previous three.
“The four turnovers, the huge stops, closing the game, you can’t say enough about how we played defensively,” Riley said. “You just can’t.”
I asked Caleb Williams if his Heisman Trophy was still sitting on his dining room table. He said yes, then, as he was walking away, added, “Gonna have two of them soon!”
Lots of NFL teams represented at Drake London’s individual Pro Day. An especially intriguing one: The Detroit Lions, who pick second overall.
Senior personnel executive John Dorsey is out here watching London himself.
USC DE Nick Figueroa was named a First Team Academic All-American in 2022. He has a GPA of 3.76 and is finishing a master’s in finance.
He was a Second Team Academic All-American last year. Quite a run for Figueroa, who has always been a joy to talk to during his time at USC.
USC wideout Mario Williams and linebacker Eric Gentry have returned to practice, and Lincoln Riley said USC is “hopeful” that they’ll get reps on Saturday vs. UCLA.
Ten of USC’s 19 signees today — including Malachi Nelson, Zachariah Branch and Makai Lemon, among others — will enroll early and be ready for spring practice.
Bronny James is expected to make his debut for USC on Sunday against Long Beach State, Andy Enfield says.
Bronny participated in his first full-contact practice on Thursday.
While writing about what it means to be a father, I actually became one myself.
Meet Camden Alexander Kartje. He was born last night, and he and mom are doing great. We’re already obsessed with this little guy.
New receiver Dorian Singer should be an ideal replacement for Jordan Addison as the deep threat in USC’s offense. Singer had 14 catches of 20-plus yards for Arizona this season, fifth-most in the nation and the most of any receiver in the Pac-12.
Just absolutely baffled at the fact that the refs in Tucson conferred afterwards, knowing the clock had CLEARLY started prior the spot, and yet they threw up their hands and did nothing while Arizona left for the locker room.
Complete, utter incompetence.
In this new, chaotic era of college football, USC’s QB is laying the blueprint for NIL.
For Caleb Williams, his family and the PR team around him, that was the plan all along.
“He really is a pioneer.”
On the NIL empire being built around
@CALEBcsw
:
After USC hired Lincoln Riley last November, AD Mike Bohn promised that now “a sleeping giant is wide awake”.
A year later, even Bohn admits he didn’t expect USC to be awoken quite this quickly
Shane Lee was asked what’s at stake for USC in its bowl game:
"It’s everything, man. You definitely want to finish off on the right note, especially because we’re here to start something. This is the foundation of what we’re trying to build, the foundation of USC’s culture ... ”
USC QB Caleb Williams was scheduled to speak w/ media today, after not being made available following his struggles last Saturday.
But the media was then told by a USC spokesperson that Williams would not be joining us.
