Director of Golf Course Maintenance- Brookhaven Country Club thoughts and tweets are my own. humble servant, teacher, student, and proud dog dad to Miss Teddy
“Implementing extreme ownership requires checking your ego and operating with a high degree of humility. Admitting mistakes, taking ownership, and developing a plan to overcome challenges are integral to any successful team. “-Jocko Willink
Great read or listen for any leader.
Although it was a brief chapter, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished here and believe the club is back on the upswing. Excited to continue my career with Invited Clubs and begin the next chapter as Director of Agronomy at Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas!
Repairing a broken drain line nearby and stumbled upon long lost greens isolation valve solving the great mystery of low pressure on the greens heads. 🤦
Welp. Here we go again. 2nd time this season losing half of my already small crew in a week for a variety of reasons. Yet we’ll keep pushing forward and making it happen. Celebrating this Labor Day with a setup and spray!
Finally found a greens drain blowout. You’d think we could have kept the massive box edged but it’s been buried so long my guys didn’t believe these existed. 1 down, 47 more greens to locate😅
Set a goal of fulfilling requirements for CGCS when I first became superintendent and after a few delays moving across the country twice and taking on an operation needing alot of TLC I finally achieved that goal!Couldn’t have done it without support of many mentors along the way
Had two 18 yr olds come in for interviews today. Both showed up early and were incredibly professional. Love seeing young kids break the stereotypes. They are going to be strong assets for our team.
While it was a short career chapter, I am proud of what we were able to accomplish this year despite the many challenges of 2020. Excited to be heading back to the Caribbean as GCS of Canouan Estate Golf Course in St. Vincent and the Grenadines!
Bittersweet turning in the keys after a fun couple of seasons at Ford’s Colony but excited for the next chapter at Greenbrier Country Club in Chesapeake!
Started something new this year with my younger guys who struggle to get to work on time. Alarm Clock, a great book, and a handwritten note has been very effective so far.
Bought 200 irrigation flags and made it through 6 of 45 holes before I ran out. Never seen so many nozzles installed upside down and soaking turf right next to head. Not to mention the rainbow assortment of nozzles found for greens heads.
Been a hectic couple of weeks but managed to work in my first ever trip to the masters on Tuesday and was not disappointed! All around, Absolutely incredible. Living/working 25 minutes away has its perks and I’ll definitely be back!
Club installed lots of drainage in its early years but now we have 6-7 drainage repairs to make on every hole of both courses. Thankfully have a stockpile of pipe and a crew enjoying the process of restoring the property. One project, one day at a time and we’re trending ⬆️
Another greens drain functioning again after quite a bit of digging to find exit. They installed this one 2” below the ponds surface and a good 20 yards into the middle of pond. Can’t believe it failed 🙈
Two most critical on the course components of a healthy golf course: irrigation and drainage. It’s amazing how things turn around when you can properly irrigate when you need to and drain when you have to. Always the first two things I get after when I start somewhere new.
Locating greens drains without maps has been challenging. lines were ran to bottom of ponds which now have 30 years of silt on top. I was today years old when I realized compass app on iPhone great tool for identifying lowest point of green without setting up transit. 😅
Hard to believe its been 13 years since my last visit to the national show. Thanks
@GCSAA
and
@BayerGolf
for the opportunity. See everyone in San Diego!
Nine GCSAA members have been chosen to participate in the
@BayerGolf
Superintendent Grant Program and will attend the 2022
#GCSAAConference
in San Diego.
Exclamation point on the week with a Saturday afternoon mow on the Jones fairways. They are loving life after monday pigment/fert app and a week of sunny skies/warm temps
One of the goals I set for this year was improving member communication so I started putting a lot of time into writing a monthly newsletter. Usually 3-4 pages covering the good, bad, and the ugly. The results have been outstanding. Nearly every member I bump into (1/2)
Head was dug up who knows how long ago and not reinstalled level. Only reason this area is dry. My guys think I’m ocd but the little stuff matters. Over many years all these little things have added up to big problems
Was looking for the greens drainage exit and discovered the edge of the greens cavity with a tracking wire running with it. Turns out the smallest green on property was once a lot bigger and had some character to it. Was no pipe so we installed one
Very well said. We call the younger generation entitled and lazy but in truth most are smart and want to live a life worth living. We can do so much better and those who recognize this will be the ones winning moving forward.
Where have all the assistants gone? A snippet from a fascinating conversation between
@TurfNetMaestro
and
@MedinahTurf
. A veteran superintendent who gets it.
First aerification at a new place is always challenging but after 3 days of adjusting , repairing, and teaching proper operations/techniques, I’m pleased with how greens turned out. 2nd one should be smooth sailing right?😅
First cut on Cupp course overseed after a rollercoaster couple of weeks:
4” rain 2 days post seed
6 days no sun following
Damping off discovered/treated
9 nights low 40’s
A few thin areas but not bad all things considered for a low seeding rate 😅
We got aggressive over the winter pruning roots with a trencher and it’s paying off now with Bermuda filling in the outside edges now that’s it no longer has to compete with trees for water
Last of the big irrigation issues fixed now back to the minor adjustments and fixes to get it dialed in. Amazing how much better controllers work with the right size fuses in them 🙈
Thankful to have an incredibly supportive and appreciative membership. At least once a month, lunch is brought in for the guys. Today more pizzas then guys!
Having a high chemical budget isn’t something to be proud of. Shift those $ into irrigation, drainage, fertilizer and watch the need for chemical rescue drop drastically. Get back to the basics with turf grass management 101 and the grass will fight most of the fight on its own
Cleaned out what was a storage room full of junk and uncovered a fully functional wood shop. Fortunate to have a talented house maintenance director that’s been helping us rebuild course amenities
Added a talented horticulturist to the team a few months ago and gave him the freedom to beautify the clubhouse grounds as he felt fit. It’s fun watching an artist show off his craft and add creative feature’s around the grounds
Almost 5” rain Sat/sun. Thankfully dry enough to get mowers out and perfect timing for a new fwy unit delivery today. 6” rain and 20-30 mph winds incoming.
Had the privilege of working underneath several great superintendents/mentors and take the lessons learned everywhere I go. Todays lesson remembered: if you get a spray window, take it. The next one is never guaranteed. Soil temps at 58 and climbing fast. Preemerge time is here
With rain threatening the rest of our overseeding week, the team absolutely crushed it today and got it finished. Might be a small team but dang they are the best
We have a long road ahead but I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a great team. Breakfast meet and greet for the members this morning with my superintendents, equipment manager , and some of our new toys. Looking forward to turning this place around with these guys at my side!
First round of sod earlier this year took some installation lessons but the team lead by Superintendent Jose Sillas is dialed in now. Tifeagle green with TifTuf collar going on Masters 1. Teddy says these guys got it Dad, let’s go play!
Delayed opening this morning as rawhide creek was roaring. Long term projects targeting creek restoration to maximize water flow, erosion control on the banks, properly sized overflow piping, and targeted removal of cypress trees planted in problematic places in planning stages
Irrigation upgrade complete. Last year it was about a 3 hour job to get water on all 18 greens and the only water tees and fairways saw was from the daily flooded hydraulic heads. How sweet it is to have a system function properly!
The most rewarding part of this renovation is giving the team ownership of the project in various ways and teaching guys to do things they’ve never done before. Here we have a seasoned vet teaching a new ep the art of mowing fairways
Have had a lot of fun getting rid of all the straight runways and recapturing original fairway shapes and sizes. Long ways to go but getting a little better every day!
Was stoked to find this disker lost in brush overgrowth outside of the shop. Perfect for busting up the roots we pruned over winter. Throw in some topsoil that was burying our parking lot, old fert from shop, and aerification plugs/vcut sprigs, we’ll soon be growing grass again
Team making great progress repairing drainage. Many of the lines have clogged and/or buried catch basins at the end of runs near tree lines. Was a tad surprised to find this one ran into middle of a fairway running parallel to pipeless gravel trench to nowhere 🤦
Fairways getting some love on this maintenance Monday. Working on bringing up some of that beautiful subsurface sand hiding beneath a decade of thatch from no aerations.
