I would rate her 4 out of 5 5 being excellent. This was a labour chancellor dealing with a toxic heritage and facing a hostile press She and the PM are our best defence against the darker forces on both the right and left who offer ‘solutions’ which are unthinkable or indoable

@SamCoatesSky Try doing some proper journalism, focusing your efforts on a real story like Russian influence in Brexit referendum for starters 🙄

@SamCoatesSky Perhaps a bit more scrutiny on whether the Conservatives misled the public on covid contracts or whether Reform and the Conservatives ‘misled’ the public on Russian involvement in politics would be more important questions to ask.

Well said. Someone needs to stand up for the Chancellor who is doing the best job she can in difficult circumstances. To those critics on her right or left I would say one thing. Be careful what you wish for

@SamCoatesSky It’s a successful budget. The markets liked it . It redistributes wealth to support those on the lowest income. Sunak’s did a reverse Robin Hood. Truss tanked it. Is hanging onto this dull story an attempt to smear Rachel Reeves or to prove women can’t be trusted to do the job?

The absurdity of the shock horror at the chancellor’s budget is massively overstating the truth - everyone said she should allow some headroom to protect the public finances which are still in a parlous state due to austerity Brexit and Covid.

Also for those nearing the end of their lives he did a great job for them - allowing patients with Covid to be discharged into nursing and residential homes where many died too soon - and alone. His incompetence has cost us dearly in so many ways

@haveigotnews It was all of those things and much more. The country sacrificed the future of those at the start of their lives, so those nearing the end could get a few days longer. Never again.

@haveigotnews Boris is and always was a clown and probably still more popular than Kemi. I don’t know why he still continues to lie about COVID he was out of his depth and he also caught it and his cabinet was too incompetent. But please someone other than his mom cut his hair

Thank you Steve, and to all the delegates, activists and members who continue to be the lifeblood of this Labour Government. I’m sad not to be alongside you all in Liverpool this year, but I’m with you in spirit - and will continue fighting for working people.

So much for the ‘party of the people’ Don’t be deceived by the sound and the fury of a party that wants to turn the clock back - by dismantling the welfare state rather than reforming it. Slogans make a poor substitute for policies.

Journalists questioning Nigel Farage should be pointing out Brexit has been a primary factor in the sky rocketing number of small boat crossings. How hard can this be?

1. An extra £100m for employment support in 27-28 & £200m in 28-29, on top of previously announced rises. Improving match between increases coming in & benefit changes. I’d estimate an extra 8-20k people into work.

Without the investment in adult skills our industrial strategy will be compromised from the start and the benefits bill will increase faster than our economic growth. It’s not all about higher level skills

Disappointed the Skills chapter in today’s IS still lacks real incentives for adult learners. Funding favours the already-qualified, backs courses with poor outcomes, and shifts costs from employers to taxpayers. We need a proper Post-16 Skills Strategy.

As minimum wage and NICs rises take effect, retail & hospitality estimated to have fastest wage growth & biggest falls in employment. Data subject to revision so time will tell whether this is right, a sign of particular strain in those sectors, or forewarning of larger slowdown

Baroness Garden has raised issues about the sustainability of FE whilst it struggles with recruitment and retention of staff with the vital skills which we need so urgently We can’t solve the skills crisis in many sectors of our economy unless we invest in FE. Love is not enough
